So, we heard today that we did not match in Radiology OR in prelim. Radiology I can understand, but prelim?????? He had 8 interviews. Shall I slit my wrists now or later?

Re: No match - now what
Oh, crud. I'm sorry. Having to limit yourselves geographically is really rough. I haven't gone through this myself, yet, so I have no advice to give you, but I wanted to offer what support I can. That sucks. I hope you can figure something out that will work for you both!Sandy

Re: No match - now what
I hope so too. The no prelim match is because he didn't match in radiology. The dean at his school says that they had a number of no-matches this year....small consolation. I just hope we don't have to spend 5!!!! years apart......I could not take that.

Re: No match - now what
There is still a chance that any of those places didn't match either and have openings. Can his PD or chairman make some calls? Another option is trying to get a spot outside of the match for prelim at any of those places and working on getting in during that year.
Good luck!

Re: No match - now what
It's just heart-wrenching.
The (small) upside is that schools like to take care of their own, so he will likely be okay for the prelim year at the same institution he's graduating from. Then you have to make the joint decision about possible specialty-switch or living long-distance.
Hugs to you.

Ugh, that sucks. It looks like there are a few unfilled rads spots... maybe you'll get lucky and some of them will be close by.
It sounds like you've got a solid strategy in place.Julia - legislative process lover and general government nerd, married to a PICU & Medical Ethics attending, raising a toddler son and expecting a baby daughter Oct '16.

Robert240: I am SO sorry. Over the years, we have had several friends who've gone through this (as well as DH's dad, years ago). I know it is, as someone else said, just heart-wrenching. I have my fingers crossed for you guys that it will work out--we've known several people who had to scramble, but everything worked out great, anyway! Hang in there.

I don't have too much advice, but a huge hug.
My DF showed me this stat page today. Since I still get confused by the whole prelim year thing, I am going to give you the link so that you may peruse it on your own. It's the stats about what positions are filled and unfilled, broken down by types of residency program and regions of the country.
