I was 21 and DH was 22. Looking back that seems sooo young ... but we've been blessed with an easy marriage. I'm also thankful that we've had plenty of years to play together before even considering having kids. So, while I wouldn't recommend it - it sure worked out well in our case.

How old were you when you got married?

We were both 22. It wasn't planned to be that way. We had already been together for almost 4 years and had living together for almost 2 years. We planned to get married after undergrad.
I would hope that my children will wait until after undergrad to get married. Obviously it works out for some, but I think that you're a totally different person in HS then you are say 4 or 5 years after whether you go to college or not. I think it is really beneficial to have some type of parent-free life experiences before you go off and become someone's wife/husband or mother/father. There are of course individual differences to be considered.
Honestly, I'm more concerned about who they marry rather than when they get married. Ultimately as long as he/she is a kind, respectful, hard working, goal oriented, and contributing citizen I'll be fine in the end.

I was 21 and DH was 27. I would recommend it, if the child was mature enough. I was never interested in going out and partying, so I am perfectly content with my one guy. But I have friends who could never be married right now!!

I was 22 DH was 25, and I wouldn't change a thing. I feel blessed that I met the person I wanted to marry so young...to me it just means we will have more time together.
I don't think it matters how old you are as long as you are getting married for the right reasons.

DH and I met when we were 18 (college freshmen), and got married when we were 24 (between MS2 and MS3). We probably would have gotten married sooner had he not gone to med school, but probably would have at least finished college first.~Jane

So many times I have wished that I met DH years earlier. We met when he was a wet-behind-the-ears attending. I was a few weeks shy of 31 and he was 32 when we married. (had lived together for a year, and dated the year before that)
I'm envious of you who have known your spouses since before undergrad!!

So to add one to this... How did you meet your spouse??
Ryan was my math tutor when I was in high school. Our families have always been close. Ryan's mother use to babysit me when I was a baby. Ryan was always older than I was and we never thought about dating since he was so much older than I was (6 years during high school is a lot) But he went on to college and then I needed help in high school calculus. We started dating a year after that. We dated about 4 years and engaged for 1 year. He is my high-school sweetheart, my one and only boyfriend (I might have had one in kindergarten )

DH and I were married at 19, but I think we were old for our age. We met at a magnet residential high school our junior year and started dating there. Moving out of our parents' houses at 16 to go to school really made us grow up a lot faster than people who finish high school at home. We were married right after our Freshman year of college, and our college years have been the happiest years so far of our marriage. We were completely broke, living off of financial aid and scholarships, but it was so much fun!
I don't think I would mind my future kids getting married that young, as long as they and their fiancé are mature enough and capable of supporting themselves. (We'd still pay for their tuition, of course.) My parents were married when Mom was 19 and Dad was 21, and DH's parents were married when they were both 19. All still together. I think that has a lot to do with the part of the country we're from, though. It's much more common to marry young there.Laurie

On the how did you meet/timing front -- DrK spotted me at a South Beach nightclub about 6 months before we actually met. It was Christmas Eve and I was out with a girlfriend. (A couple of the SoBe clubs have huge Christmas Eve parties. There are generally a lot of people in town around the Winter holidays.) There were so many men there that night; They were literally lining up to speak with the women. It was so overwhelming that we left early and had grilled cheese sandwiches at the diner across the street. DrK didn't speak with me that night. I didn't give my number anyone and I don't think DrK met anyone either.
Fast forward a year later, DrK and I had been dating since Summer and had spent Thanksgiving with each other's families; I'd met his grandmother. My girlfriend asked me to go out with her on Christmas Eve again and I asked DrK how he felt about it. The lightbulb went off and he asked which party we'd gone to the year before and whether I wore a big red rose near my face. I showed him the necklace I was wearing that night; it was a one-of-a-kind choker made by a friend of my mom's and it had a huge red rose on it.
I was surprised he remembered me but that we didn't meet that night. He told me that his first impression that night was "nice boobies." He was a little drunk. The place was crowded and noisy and heck it wasn't as if anyone was sizing up anyone on the basis of his/her personality. I think it's really a good thing that he didn't approach me that night. If he had, chances are that he would not have introduced the girl with the nice boobies to his grandmother.Wife and #1 Fan of Attending Adult & Geriatric Psychiatrist.

We met during the first couple of weeks of freshman year in the dorms (fall of 96). We lived in 6 people suites. The boys that lived across from my suite knew the boys in the front room of his suite so we'd all hang out together. We didn't start dating until winter quarter (jan 97).

We met 1st day, 1st period of high school (sophomore year for our school system). I walked up to him and said "Are you smart?" He answered "Relatively." , to which I said "Okay, I'll sit by you."
We were good friends all thru high school, but didn't start dating until we were 20.

OMG, that is sooooo funny. I can so see you doing this. I want to use it for my own story. Can I please? Now we know where your kids get it!Last edited by Meenah; 08-11-2009, 01:10 AM.Luanne
