I have a BS in Geology and a MS in Hydrology. Not so family friendly (lots of travel and site work), so I don't know if I'll work in the field again. Ideally I would like to teach at college level one day, part time of course I am now a SAHM.

I was very lucky and found a great job in my field when we moved for intern year, a few months before a hiring freeze took effect. When we moved AGAIN for residency I wanted to stay home, which is good because I doubt that I would find a job now anyway!

    Welcome to our site.
Where did you get your degrees from? I loved hydrology when I was in meteorology!

Oh, man, Laker, I am right there with you. I've been out long enough so that I can waive into a lot of jurisdictions, but I told him: if he takes a job in CA, it better be a mighty BIG PAYING job...because I ain't takin' another bar (no reciprocity in CA)!!

And though all my family members and friends have passed without problems, I hear that the CA bar pass rate is only about 50%.

I believe this is also the case in NY. FL does not have admission without exam either.

Neither in the US. I did my undergrad at U of Victoria (Canada) and my masters in Ireland. U Vic had a big meteorology department, lots of funding for climate change research, so they made us take a couple classes but I hated it! Give me rocks and water over air, lol!

                omg, hilarious visual!!

I never finished college either, but I am currently attending the local private college finishing up a psych degree. (I was driving two hours a day to a different school majoring in cell & molecular bio but I don't have that kind of stamina anymore. All I want is that damn piece of paper so I can call it a day!)

I don't have any career plans at the moment...or rather, I have a dozen but there's too much on my plate these days to pursue any of them.

HA...What's that like? Really...it's so calm around here!

I have my BA in Psych and German. I did a post-bacc in biology and have my MS in molecular biology. I taught bio labs at our local univ for a few years but have been a sahm for most of my mommy *career*.

Over the last year or so I have gone back to take some refresher classes in the sciences. I'm planning on sitting the MCAT this year or next <boo hiss, I know>. Of course, since I have 5 kiddos and life is kicking my behind lately, I might still be having the conversation with myself about what I'm going to do with my life in 10 years. But...for now...I'll just keep on plowing ahead. I'd like to apply to med school or pa school. We'll see.

unfortunately, I am lic. in FL, and we don't have reciprocity with anyone. You would have the same issue if you moved here, you have to take the bar. I think I can waive into MI, but just about everywhere else requires reciprocity or that I have worked 5 out of last 7 years in jurisdiction that I'm licensed in, MI is 3 out of 5...and unfortunately we will only be in FL for 4 years for her residency...so I will be under the 5/7 limit. So basically it is FL, MI (home for us), or another bar exam. I guess I will do it if I have to, but I won't be happy about it.
Also, what complicates our "state search" is we are really trying to land in a state that doesn't have state income tax...so that is TX (right?), TN, FL, who else am I missing, but MI is out... It is all too much. Might have to stay put here.

My original license is in FL too. Here's the deal. FL does not allow admission without exam. There are 31 states that require reciprocity. For those, you're out of luck and you have to take the exam. The trick is to go to a state that has admission without exam and does not require reciprocity. That leaves about 11 states. You'll have to research the requirements for each of those states as they all have different requirements. Most have a minimum number of years of practice requirement but that differs from state to state. I researched this a couple years ago when we were in the match. I'll look for my notes.

All I know is that my friend who is a lawyer ended up taking the bar in four different states when his wife finished her peds residency- she was Air Force and he had took the exam in all of the places where they thought they might go. Two other of the places on the list he'd already taken it. and then... they were sent someplace else. He was able to successfully argue with the AF that since he was AF JAG reserves, he needed to be someplace where he could actually practice so they ended up at a Podunk AF base here in Texas.

This is likely my track too. We had a very enlightening conversation on Sat AM where we talked about options that might make this a possibility for us. Examples included him going into academics and therefore possibly getting a discount/in-state tuition at a medical school. I have no illusions of being some well recognized surgeon with a 10 year long residency but given the fact that I could take the 2 classes I need and polish off the MCATs in ~6 months, I don't think it's impossible. I just need to decide if it's the right thing for me after we get married and hopefully have some kiddos.

I have my PhD in theatre with and emphasis on theatre in education. DH and I did school together at the same time and managed to squeeze in starting a family. I've been lucky enough to find work everywhere we have gone, but it has been all over the map...thankfully a positive in my line of work. I taught adjunct classes in Milwaukee, picked up directing gigs and classes at the professional childrens theatre. When we decided to have a second child I got a job at the best daycare I could find.

When we moved to Salt Lake for fellowship I got a job as a specialist at an elementary school that included a one-way 55mi commute. I loved that job and we even tried to stay in Utah so I could keep my job...

Now I am 7 mo preggo and have decided to take this first semester off. I don't know that I am well suited to Sahm life and I am looking to register on the state artist registry for schools and pick up at class or two at UW. We'll see.

Every time we've moved, I have immediately started sending e-mails to colleagues to ask who they know and can they introduce me. Sometimes it has just been plain old persistance and cold calls. My line of work is project/semester driven so even now I am working on a website as a book prospectus so that I don't really show a full semester off...

I would have loved to put my name out there and go to the best job like my husband has been able to do, but making the best of it has given me lots of strange opportunities and contacts all over the country that I will always be grateful for. Also, I could only dream of ever making an eighth of what he does, so I have to be flexible, but we (me included) knew that 10 years ago when we got engaged in undergrad

Best of luck...dual career households...especially with kids is tough enough without one career being so rigid and all encompassing .
