But even before that happened I started backing mine up to DVD and putting them in the safe deposit box, pictures are priceless IMO and I would be devastated if I lost mine.
I just bought a 1 TB external hard drive for just $100 to back up everything on my laptop, including pictures and music. I think it would be less time consuming than burning to DVD, in case you are interested, although external hard drives can fail too...

If you have a Mac, it's even easier, though, with Time Machine!

We have all of our stuff on an external hard drive as well so I guess the DVD is a 2nd back-up. Really its for a fire type accident which is why we keep it off site.

WAHOO! As an IT person, you've made me very very proud

I'm still trying to convince my mother that a $100 external hard drive investment is a very good idea for her work laptop

We have an external harddrive. THAT is the catalyst for the picture fiasco. The key is having your pictures not just the thumbnails (honestly, I did not even know you could do that) saved. Will let you know if the Apple Geniuses can save our marriage...by saving my pix.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

This thumbnail mistake is such an Apple thing. I like my Mac just fine, but Apple really embeds files into its own formats. Coming from a PC, you can think you have found the files but really not.

I learned something new, then--I'm going to have to keep an eye out for that. I have 8,000 pictures I REALLY don't want to lose

Good luck on recovering those pics -- It's heartbreaking to lose stuff like that.

We also have recently done the EX-HD route, and I'm a Time Machine junkie.
I really should do the whole 2nd back up thing, too. Oy.
