I had arranged a big surprise party for him with all his good friends on match day, and had to cancel it, he was so foul. I had to lie to people, and claim that I was sick. I'd made this big sheet cake decorated with a "brain" that I'd made out of frosting from an anatomy pic. Got tossed.
After three weeks of that crap, I told him OFF. I called him EXACTLY what he was being and told him how utterly ungrateful he was. I was so mad that I think it surprised him. He improved after that.
Then, it turned out--after all that--that this program was a huge blessing for us, in many, many ways. We are much happier here than we would have been at his #1--or many other places.
He was a total turd. No tears. I've never seen him cry. He's not a crier. He is, however, apparently an egotistical, self-entitled jerk at times!

Sounds like match day has not changed a single bit in the last 25 years! I do remember spouses and some children being there, but not any extended family. Mostly the whole class gathered in the atrium of one of the medical school buildings, and someone called out the names one by one. Then lots of screaming occurred. Couples that were both in the class were hoping they would match in the same city. We weren't so nervous - family practice is not that competitive - but some of the people wanting to go into surgery were. We went out to dinner with some other couples that night. You're all bringing back memories that I hadn't thought about in a long time.

Wow, I totally forgot that there are schools that open their letters together. DH and his classmates were obsessively hitting the refresh buttons from the comforts of their own homes. And a lot of his classmates ended up matching at one of their top 3 choices. I think only 3 or 4 people had to scramble, and one was because she was an idiot and only ranked one program. Duh.

Oh, if you're Catholic, ask St. Jude to pray for you -- patron saint of hopeless causes. Yes, I consider match a hopeless cause!Veronica

Both times we found out online at noon. We never went anywhere. For residency he was at home and I worked from my home that day, we were in different states and he called me with the results at 12:03.
For fellowship he was actually working so I logged in to the NRMP at noon and found out and texted him that he got his first choice. Then of course I announced it to my friends on facebook.

Looks like you can find out online if your DH matched on Monday, March 15 at 12PM EST. I remember doing this last year at work, and DF did the same thing on a computer wherever he was. Then we called each other, then I drove my co-workers nuts for the next three days.
You can find out where your DH matched at on Thursday, March 18 at 12PM EST in person via the all-powerful (and NOT see-through) envelope. If you can stand to wait another hour , you can find out where he matched online at 1PM EST. We didn't want to just sit around a computer, and his parents came up especially for this. But everyone handles this moment differently, do what you know is best for the two of you.

My countdown is for Match (Thurs)Day. DH's is for Black Monday. How awful with that be? You go up to the mic to announce where you matched and find a blank/empty envelope.Back in the Midwest with my PGY-2 ortho DH and putting my fashion degree to good use.

Part of me still wishes NSG was early match because you at least find out in January if you don't match and have a little more time to try and throw backup plans together.
Gosh what a nightmare if DH doesn't match, I don't even want to think about it - we'll just deal with it if it happens......Loving wife of neurosurgeon

My stomach is doing flips just reading through this thread.
S was under the impression that we will be staying home and getting the Match news on the computer. I think I prefer that... I will be there visiting for 2 weeks.
The whole thing is very nerve racking!! (And I won't be moving with him next year so I can't imagine what it's doing for those that have a big move ahead....)
