  • Great article! I wonder how many of us grew up in schools where kids were assigned to open windows before taking cover under our desks? I'm happy that we've figured out kids are safer in a windowless hallway. When we lived IL, DD's preschool was built with help from State Farm, and had a tornado room. She really can't understand why that's more necessary in central IL than in Cleveland. Oh well.

Actually, the book I just read about the Tri-State Tornado in 1925 might explain some of that. Apparently at least Southern IL still has more tornado awareness, shelters, etc because of the devastating impact of that tornado. Who knows!

      • It's definitely more necessary there. We averaged 5-10 tornado warnings a spring when we lived there. It's an area that just has the right conditions for tornadoes.

        • Looks to be "fun" in OKC today. Stay safe, Ides.

Just remember: Gary England. News 9.

          • We don't have cable. Should I watch a certain website? Do we need a weather radio? We are in the city proper so I'm sort of relying on the horns.

O was asking all about Tornados last night. I think he was afraid one would come while we were sleeping and blow us away.

            • Everyone should have a weather radio. Preferably one that has a load tone to wake you in event of a warning. That's my PSA for the day.

Weather.gov is your website, and Gary England on News9 is your go-to guy. (Regular television).

Emergency weather radio or crank radio in case of power loss is great.
3-4 gallons of distilled water, flashlight or lanterns with batteries, a headlamp or two, and power outage activities for O. We had coloring books and board games.

Safest place if you don't have a storm shelter is the center of your house, a room with no windows (think master or hall closet).
If not, bathtub with mattress overhead.

                • Thanks. We've decided on the understairs closet. It's in the center of the house and no windows.

My mom and dad and I survived a deadly tornado in Wichita Falls, TX in 1979 in a bathtub with a mattress over our heads. It was apparently a harrowing experience and starting two blocks over the city was apparently unrecognizable. I was only a few months old, so I was obviously cool with it. Anyway, apparently the only thing they could think of (besides “holy shit”) as they heard the tornado coming was that they had forgotten to open any windows. They were pissed when they found out years later that that was totally unnecessary.

What 13 said and get the iMap Iphone weather radio app in the meantime--it's good! Read the hazardous weather alerts, etc. that come up when you search for OKC on weather.gov. Really good, detailed info. But Gary wont steer you wrong.
