My husband always says the iPhone is a great device, but a crappy phone. He's dropped calls while sitting at his desk. I rarely (can't remember the last time) drop calls (Verizon).

DH is planning for us to switch to AT&T to get the iPhone next week. I've been trying to fight this, but his plan has always been to get one when residency starts. He has a super expensive smart phone with Sprint, but of course it's "not an iPhone." I want a simple phone that has a keypad, but I think AT&T will require me to get a data plan that I will probably never use. Oh well.

You should not have to. My mom just got a phone from AT&T with a keypad and she does not have a data plan. Something that I have lerned the hard way is that not all AT&T stores are the same. I drove all the way across town (with DH ticked off at me) because the AT&T store guy totally gave me information that I knew was not right. I did not argue with him and just walked out. DH was on my case about wasting time driving across town, blah, blah, blah but buddy ate his words when we got to the other store and received much better, well informed service. So good that DH decided to go for the UVerse package.

Interesting--when you say keypad do you mean texting keyboard? Because that is what I wanted when we switched from Verizon to AT&T last month (DH has an iPhone and I am extremely jealous but we cant afford/justify 2--different rant) and they would not let me get a normal phone with a texting keyboard without a $20/month data plan. Which is ridiculous (Verizon didn't care)--I didn't plan to use the internet, just wanted the dang keyboard for texting. So I ended up with a crappy Samsung slide phone that I hate. Wish I had known what medpedspouse did!

DH's program gave them each a special phone for use in the hospital. I can't remember what it's called, but it isn't a cell phone. Between that and the pager, his work needs are pretty much covered by the program.

We switched to Verizon because AT&T has horrible service here, and we both have android phones (DH a Droid and me a Droid Eris), which are proving to be a lot of fun.

Yes, that's the same boat I'm in. I want a texting keyboard. I hate texting in T9! But at least DH's hospital gets a 25% discount with AT&T.

                Re: Cell Phone Service

Update: Russ went into the Apple store to have his 3G looked at bc of the dropped calls, connection issues and headphone issues....he ended up leaving with an iPhone4. (eyeroll). But we've since had 2 awesome conversations w no issues. This last time we chatted for an hour! So I guess the majority of our problem was his phone. Now I'm a tad jealous he has the 4! S'ok I have an iPad!!

We've had the iPhone since DH's first year. I was the holdout, but DH really wanted it to cut down on the number of things clipped to his belt. I was totally prepared to get it for him and something else for myself. After playing with it for a couple minutes, I was drawn to the dark side.

We've had a really great experience with AT&T. My first iPhone was defective and Apple was not even a little helpful. The gal with AT&T totally kicked, took names, and got my 1 week old phone immediately replaced.

I've heard the same, and my hatred of AT&T is enough that I'm willing to wait for eons ...

I'm sure we've talked about this before, but did you all know that Sprint PASSED on the iPhone before it was pitched to AT&T?? They're based here in KC -- everyone knows someone or several folks who work for Sprint, were laid off from Sprint, etc. It boggles the mind.

Sprint seems to make lots of decisions that boggle the mind like the fact that their KC area coverage SUCKS when they are based there.

TONS of my friends went to work for them after college, none are there anymore and all left on their own.

I thought I read that all of the major carriers passed on the iPhone except for Cingular (which is now AT&T). Apple (of course) wanted to maintain control over the development/release/profits of the iPhone. This is unusual for normal phone-carrier relationships, but it is Apple, so they get what they want. I really hope that Verizon gets it because we gave up our iPhones after 1 week because AT&T service SUCKS here in Denver.

It always makes me chuckle when I drive around the Peninsula here, because even when you go through Cupertino, reception is TERRIBLE on my iphone.

DH has iphone, and I had AT&T with work. I have a pay as ya go now, with no contract. The hope was that once I got a job I would switch to a contract and get the new iphone. Well if you look at the new plans, they SUCK!!! You have to pay for THREE SEPARATE PLANS, one for phone, one for internet, one for text. The cost is rediculous!!! Right now I am struggling with no internet, but its just not worth the cost. With no contract, I am hoping to hold out until January to go to Verizon... I am hoping that AT&T will have to start competing in terms of price and service (although DH has had no service problems) once Verizon is in the iphone market.
