We never needed anything special on the phone for residency. Pagers and ordinary phone calls handled all business communication. (Nobody had cell service inside the hospital anyway.)

We've never had a data plan, or even text messaging (we pay per text, and send/receive about 20 per year). Been with AT&T or Cingular for as long as we've had cell phones, no major problems in Portland, Cleveland, Phoenix, or here.

DH primarily uses his pager while in the hospital, and rarely his cell phone. There is little to no reception in the hospital, unless you have AT&T. Then, you will have great reception. We talked about this last summer and the ability to have service in the hospital is not worth dropping calls everywhere else. So we didn't switch to AT&T and won't be doing so anytime soon.

We both have Verizon phones and are in the process of leaving our parents' plans and creating our own account. This also include phone upgrades - Droid Incredible for DH, LG Ally for me. Chrisada - I can't stand T9 either and I have to have a keyboard. That's why I didn't want a Droid quite yet, I don't like the touch screen keyboard.

There is a new Droid coming out in 2 weeks - the Droid X by Motorola. The guy in the Verizon store was hyping it up - it's got a bigger screen, more memory and better video than the Droid Incredible. The Incredible is also on back order for a month, so if the X is more available when we upgrade at the end of the month, then DH will get the X.
