He never had time during residency but he does now. Don't give up on him if it's not a priority during training. The Y family memberships are great because they have very affordable classes for the kids too. Ours has 1.5 hours of free child care daily. Even if he isn't able to utilize it much now I bet your family will really enjoy it, especially as a distraction when Daddy is busy at the hospital.

DH didn't work out during residency.....no time for that whatsoever. He doesn't really have time now either.....some days he leaves home at 7 and comes home 12 or 13 hours later without having eaten in the interim. That needs to change! He does walk a LOT during the day, from his office to L & D and back several times a day. There is a Y being built on his way home from the hospital and I know he is interested in working out there when it is finished, but it will never happen until his work load decreases.

No, no working out here. I will say though that we walks all day long and rarely sits so I figure that counts as exercise.

Yes- it makes me feel like a slacker! I'm always so tired after working all day and the long commute, I haven't worked out in a really long time- and then he's completely busy and he still finds time to work out! I am proud of him, but I need to get my butt in gear....

Does riding a bike for 60 or so miles count? (gag). If so, DH works out. There is the medical mistress and the road bike mistress.

We have never worked out together. Our styles are so different - even riding our bikes.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

We get free gym memberships at the hospital's wellness center so DH works out religiously. It's relatively close to the hospital and has a pool, tons of machines, free weights, a pilates studio, basketball court and lots of group exercise classes in both the classrooms and in the pool.

He gained a TON of weight in med school and lost about 60 lbs before entering residency.

DH runs. Whenever he can. He survives on like 5 hours of sleep so he'll go running at 9 or 10 at night and still get up at 5 or 6.

Yes, he worked out as much as he could- but he's paid to stay in shape. He rides his bike often, he runs and amazingly at age 42 he maxed the PT test this last time. Maxed the test if he was 22, maxed the test.

He got a little pudgy in medical school- and intern year was all about sleep and convenience food so he had to pick up the pace a bit.

I would say that he wont have time for this as much come August and beyond, but some idiot invented the indoor trainer, enabling 1 am INDOOR 60 mile bike rides. Blech

DH doesn't. He gained weight in med school. He gained weight in residency. Me too. Sigh.

DH definitely gained weight the first couple years of med school and has been trying very hard to improve his eating and exercise habits. He has a Y membership and loves it. The difficulty for him in med school, and I imagine the same would be true to some extent for an intern, has been that as soon as he gets into a good routine he starts a new rotation and his schedule totally changes. I've found it very frustrating to pay his Y membership dues during the rotations when he doesn't go a single time.

I went to see our Y and was so disappointed. It was so so small and outdated. It reminded me of an apartment complex workout center. The YMCAs I come for are enormous and brand new. I was really surprised because we live in a very nice area. I guess everyone goes to their yacht club to workout. So, the Y is out. I'll have to ask DH about a membership at the hospital.

BTW when I brought up working out DH kinda muttered something and walked off. Hmmm. But dude is getting BIG.

No, my husband doesn't work out in a gym, but plays in a sports league. He'd rather play a sport which he finds more interesting than working out in a gym, which he finds boring.

Have you looked into seeing if you can get a discount any of the other local healthclubs with DH's affiliation with the hospital/med school? I find my DH could care less about the "benefits" we get so I wouldn't know about any of them if I hadn't hassled him about them... so you may want to look into even though your DH has never mentioned it to you. There may be gyms that will offer you a discount.

If you can find a place that you like and has daycare make sure you join for YOU. You DESERVE some you time to get away and destress!

Also, check your health insurance. Some will pay for part of a gym membership at certain gyms. The gyms sometimes have this information as well.
