  • Anyone else getting (or was) married right after graduation?

May is going to be a crazy month! We're getting married 4 days after graduation and I feel a little guilty that I'm stealing his thunder. did anyone do anything special at the wedding (or have any ideas how to acknowledge graduation)?

My other question/concern...we're immediately going on our honeymoon...which could/will be cutting it close to orientation and/or moving. How did this work for everyone else?

    Many of us did.

We were married 12 days after graduation. I didn't give a second thought to thunder-stealing. Everyone knew he was graduating, and believe me, they get enough "oooh, you're a dawkter". As to the honeymoon, we didn't move, but I wouldn't plan one until you know where you match and what your schedule is. You don't want to risk bumping up against orientation -- it isn't even an option to start out on the wrong foot.

We were married a couple months before graduation -- 12 days before match. We went on a 10- day honeymoon. It was a great distraction.

We got married between years 3 and 4 so that part doesn't apply but I would be VERY careful about planning a honeymoon before you know where you're going. Here orientation starts a full two weeks before the academic year starts, so this year orientation starts the week of June 13th.

We got married the day after graduation. (graduation was Saturday, wedding was Sunday, packers came on Monday, moved on Tuesday, at new place on Thursday night). We didn't take a honeymoon until November- he graduated in May.

I would be very, very careful with start dates because he cannot- as in CANNOT miss any part of orientation. Evenif he's doing residency where he went to medical school and knows everyone and their brother and the Program Director lives next door can he miss. It took the whole two weeks before July 1 to in-process and get through orientation.

Congrats on all of the above, though!

Orientation starts 2 weeks before start day as well. I wouldn't plan anything prior to knowing your actual start date as orientation is mandatory in order to start on July 1st.

ETA: We didn't get married but 3 days after graduation we moved for residency. And two days after our arrival in our new city we left for CA and Maui for two weeks. Made it back with a week before orientation. But in that week prior to orientation, DH got together and bonded [golfing, drinks] with his 3 co-residents. We didn't purchase any tickets until after match and when we received dates for when he had to report to orientation.

A little different, but: we got married after his intern year. You don't always get your first choice for vacation time, so we had to take our honeymoon later. Medicine dictates so many aspects of your life, even once you've already entered residency (and I'm assuming beyond as well).
I like the wait and see approach - once he matches, if there's not enough time, post-pone "the big honeymoon" and consider maybe a quick getaway to tide you over until you can take it.

REALLY good to know! He's tried to reassure me that we have more than enough time, but I think I'm better at doing to research first. How quickly after you match do you find out your orientation schedule?

I don't even remember-! I'm pretty sure that it was on his military orders what the report date was. But, that was 11 years, six moves, one deployment and two fellowships ago. (two dogs, too many cats and one kid ago, too)

ETA: right- and trust us when we tell you that there will be a Chrstmas/Holiday party that you won't find out about until either that day or the day before. From here on out, operate by that infamous phrase, "trust, but verify."

Mine too, I would say a week, maybe two he had an entire packet of information.

DH was getting emails a couple hours after the match results were announced asking about his vacation preferences. We got his schedule for the year during the first week of orientation. The residency coordinators at his program are FREAKISHLY on top of things. I'll miss them when we move.

Graduation from med school or any graduation?

We got married 6 days after I graduated from undergrad. But I guess that's not really the scenario you're talking about!

We got married 1 month after graduation...undergrad

All I can say is, be nice to yourself and don't think about ANYTHING else on your honeymoon. I was a wreck the 2 months we graduated/moved/got married/he started med school/I started a job.

No. We married before the whole medical thing but are still waiting to go on that honeymoon :/

Like others have said definitely wait until u know the schedule/requirements before scheduling your trip.

Oh, dhs program coordinator was/is terrible. We had to nicely request info many times to figure out what we needed to do. Sigh.
