  • residency pay

So I know this may sound like a dumb question, but we were looking at the pay scale for residency on average it is about $42,000 to start, is this before taxes? I am assuming it is, but hoping it is not

Sadly...very likely before taxes. Slightly higher in other parts of the country.

Before taxes and any benefits that are taken out. I'm sorry I don't remember where you are in training but if he has specific programs he's looking at or has already matched they usually have the actual salaries on their websites.

And the health insurance can vary quite a bit. We paid a pretty similar amount under Northwestern and U of Chicago and then way more when we got here to UMN. We were surprised.

First, these wages vary widely from program to program. I agree to check the website or call.

(cost of health insurance) then way more when we got here to UMN. We were surprised.
I couldn't believe how much cheaper and how much more health insurance coverage we got when we moved from UMN to fellowship. We're not even heavy users of insurance and it made a huge difference in net pay and out of pocket expenditures.

Totally program dependent, as are employee contributions to benefits.

This is one thing that is really bugging me about DH's fellowship that starts in 3 months. I have a minimum salary but no actual salary and we've received info on what benefits are available but NOTHING on how much they cost. hijack over.

Do you get access to that information on the website after the match? Also does it get better with each year of residency or fellowship?

Some websites have it posted as public information, you don't have to be a match-ee there. And yes, at least here there is a small step for each year of training.

Yeah, usually on the school's GME site (as opposed to the particular residency's site). I got to ours by googling the school and GME.

(Also, this program charges next to nothing for health insurance. Not a deciding factor for us, but can be a nice perk.)

No charges for any insurance here, either.

Our pay went up about $2K each year in residency.
