I think ours increased about that much per year, too.

I seem to recall FRIEDA having information about salary and any increases expected over the course of the residency.

Edit: Yep, just looked it up. Includes compensation and leave for each year, as well as what insurance is available and whether the resident shares the cost or it's fully covered by the institution. Ah, but not every program provides that information...

I'm so excited that my BF's program has a good GME website. I have a feeling it'll be incredibly useful, seeing as though the boy wonder sometimes forgets to do things/tell me about things that I should probably know.

You should also see what book money they provide. Dh's program provides money for books, technology and licensing fees. These things aren't included on the salary but can be very helpful.

Also, find out about reimbursements for CMEs, tests, etc. We take vacation every time DH has a CME because his hospital pays for his airfare, hotel, and car for the week.

I just checked them and they also offer a related link for New AMA Membership Programs for non-Matched IMG's! That may be really helpful for us: ECFMG Membership Application

Thank you all for the additional tips. I never would have known about the book money and reimbursement money for CME's, tests, ect! Every bit helps.

I have a PDF of the 2010 benefit rates packet for residents/fellows, and I'm assuming 2011 won't be much different. PM me if you want me to send you a copy.

The military pays are based on rank and time in service, all of which can be found on the pay schedule at www.military.com. Although, if you're any rank higher than the rank of residents (Captain in the case of the Army) and you decide to get a wild hair and pursue another residency (there was a guy who went from peds to psych) they retain their rank but the pay is cut to resident pay. That's tens of thousands of dollars- and if were MY spouse, I'd be claiming widow's pay because he would have mysteriously disappeared.

Also, fellowship isn't required to follow the PGY scale. Some do, but all don't because they don't have to. Sometimes more competitive programs truly see it as slave labor. After all, you've has the pleasure of the quality of their training. Ugh. DH made 35k (Pre-tax) his year of fellowship (a year and a half ago). Thankfully I had a good job and he was allowed to moonlight at the VA (a perk they took away the following year).

Residency pay varies from state to state, depending on the cost of living in each state. DH is PGY-1 in Southern Alabama and is paid roughly 45 k per year (before taxes and insurance). After all those are taken out, we get 2.6k nett pay per month. That is a measly sum for a lot of work. Once i calculated based on an average 70 hr week, he gets paid around 7.50 per hour. Cheers!! Oh! and the hospital recently didn't pay for licensing anymore (since 2010). So, benefits do change from time to time. Moonlighting is allowed PGY-2 onwards. Hopefully that will bring us some perk. PGY-1 pay is sufficient to cover basic expenses (plus me not working). But no luxury life (as if). Can't wait for the real money to roll in...

oh and we get paid bi-weekly. So, there will be two months with 3 paychecks. So, averaged out, we get around 2.8k nett per month. And each year there is an increment of about 2k. That's not a lot but it is better than none. Wendy's and McD and Chinese food are our usual eat out places. Or when i get good deals on Groupon. Otherwise, its good ole fashion home cooked food. Where oh where is the glamour? hmmm....

There are residencies out there in very low COL areas that pay above significantly above average, but only a few. And typically in family medicine.

No one should ever calculate the per hour salary regardless of level or location - you'd still get paid more at McDonald's.
