  • Nurses are my new heros

I just wanted to start a new post so say THANK YOU to all our nurses/other health professionals on iMSN. I always knew intellectually that nurses are the primary caregivers in hospitals and that good nurses are incredibly valuable but being in the hospital for several days after D arrived made this SO real to me.

Our nurses were incredible. We probably had 7-8 nurses over our 5 day stay (we had several more than once) and without exception, they saved me. The difference between a good nurse and a bad nurse (there were 2 not great ones) meant skipped pain meds, requests for more pads/clothes/diapers, etc. went unanswered, etc. The good nurses (the vast majority) were AMAZING.

These women taught me to breastfeed, to sponge bathe our baby, to swaddle her, etc. They taught DH how to help me recover and they looked out for me when I needed special care. We had one in particular who helped me time feedings around 3 2-hr MRIs/other appointments within 48 hours of D's birth. Without her, I have no idea how frantic I would have been because I would have left her hungry without the nurses direction of how/when to start feeds.

I wanted to ask those of you who are nurses, is there any way to recognize these wonderful women? There are 2 in particular that I really, really want to thank (I had them each for 4 shifts). Obviously they work shifts so I don't know when they're on or off but I'd like to send them something/make sure a supervisor knows how valuable they were to me. They really went above and beyond and deserve something great.

I too had some amazing women.
I wrote personal, in-depth Thank You cards, placed their full names on them, and DH delivered them to the nurse station in L&D, along with 2 bouquets of flowers.
I will never forget what those women did for us.

Our hospital prints letters praising staff and distributes them once a month.
I'm just trying to make it out alive!

I think the thank you card and flowers for them personally are great, but make sure you let their supervisors know too - I'm so glad you had great help!

Send a letter to the floor to be posted in a break room, and a letter to the supervisors commending the nurses that went above and beyond. Of course, nurses love plates of cookies too. If you send food something store bought with an ingredient list included.

Kudos to you for recognizing others in the throes of new motherhood.

Send a note to their boss. It's absolutely the best gift you can give them. If you receive a patient satisfaction survey, list them by name and specifically what they did that was above and beyond. If you want to do more, you really have to send something to the nurse's station for everyone - just about every hospital has policies against receiving personal gifts, but if they are "shared" they're allowed and appreciated.

If anyone singles out our nurses for commendation, it goes to HR and they publish it monthly (for all staff)

Our methadone clinic (all methadone clinics, actually) are almost 100% staffed by nurses. They get to work at 5:30am every day to dose. They don't judge, they don't criticize. They help the people that accept it and call out the dealers and pimps. They are amazing.

Who is their boss? Would there be a maternity/post-partum supervisor or would it be the whole hospital supervisor?

The hospital probably has a chief nursing officer.

That is a touching post. It's such a blur, but I remember looking around the OR for my L&D nurse during my c-section, and not my dh.

Definitely copy the Director /VP of Nursing. If you just send a letter to the floor, the is no guarantee the Nursing office will see it.

So cool! My nurses were hit or miss. There were a couple nice ones, but none that I felt were great enough to fill out the survey or write a letter for.

I was in labor for 1 but it was the post partum nurses that really shined. My l&d nurse I couldn't pick out of a crowd - I was in way too much pain.
