Congrats! Uro is a very competitive field, although I'm sorry it didn't turn out like you hoped. At least now you know and can start planning ahead. Like others have said, sometimes this can be a blessing in disguise. How are the job prospects for you in the new location?

How is he taking the surprise? Are you alright?

The funny thing is that a student from the program we matched (larger, party town) in matched at the program that we ranked #1 (small town in Texas)
My DH is a urologist, and he went through the match 8 years ago! It was the first year they did the computerized match, and the schmuck who wrote the algorithm got it backwards. So, they released the results, and big name programs (think Mayo) went unfilled. My DH matched at #19 out of 20 on his list. He was pretty devastated. They realized what happened and retracted the match later that day. It took them 3 or 4 days to re-do the results. And then, DH matched at #5, I think. Anyway, it was a clusterf*ck. I am so glad to be done with the training phase.Married to a newly minted Pediatric Rad, momma to a sweet girl and a bunch of (mostly) cute boy monsters.

Congratulations on landing a slot!
Don't sweat it if your dude isn't sure how he'll "fit in". He has no idea until he's in the trenches how people's personalities will shake out. The peeps that we initially thought we'd hang with through out training ended up NOT being people we wanted to spend any extra time socializing with in the off hours. As a matter of fact, one of the other residents that DH was just sure would be a BFF ended up being a completely heartless fucking asswipe. My dude's program was full of pretty kick ass peeps, but there were a couple that needed their asses kicked.

Congratulations!! Urology is very competitive so it's a big accomplishment that he matched. As others have said, I hope the location/program turns out to be a blessing in disguise. Match is certainly a fickle bitch. Our two best friends from med school matched the same year as DH -- one went to her #1 spot and the other went to his #9 out of 10. The girl who matched at her #1 is miserable, the guy at his #9 absolutely loves it there.Wife of a surgical fellow; Mom to a busy toddler girl and 5 furballs (2 cats, 3 dogs)

Sad we missed out on another Texan, but in my very humble opinion, small town Texas sucks...(I just doomed us to matching in small town Texas next year) so maybe you dodged a bullet...Allison - professor; wife to a urology attending; mom to baby girl E (11/13), baby boy C (2/16), and a spoiled cat; knitter and hoarder of yarn; photographer

Hey I think you're going to be close to me! Well, like 2.5 hours close, which is closer than any other active members of this forum anyway -- there aren't a lot of us in the southeastWife of a surgical fellow; Mom to a busy toddler girl and 5 furballs (2 cats, 3 dogs)

Diggitydot is right about the personalities. And they can change from year to year, so the group next year may have a completely different dynamic than when he did his rotation. DH's program went through an identity crisis two years after his class. It's a program full of married-with-kids residents, and suddenly all the new interns were single frat-boy types. It was odd! I think they went back to the family-types the next year.
(Side note - My theory is that it was because competition for jobs in that city was getting a little steep, and they're not the types who would stay after residency. Lots of attendings there use the university as a stepping stone into the local private hospitals.)Laurie
