  • 2014 Match

So I'm not sure where to put this, and I might have missed in since I've been MIA lately, but DH and a few others were talking about the 2014 Match and how it will include DOs as well. I'm not sure of the logistics, but how do you think it will effect the match overall?

I didn't think this was new, I know there are separate Osteopathic residency spots, but DOs are welcome in the NRMP match currently.

LJ, good to see you too!!!

From what I understand they are eliminating the DO match all together and fully integrating both in one match....

Does that mean MDs can apply for typically DO spots too? (This was completely off my radar as we're 2013 obviously)

I don't think so...DHs hospital is now a DO teaching hospital and not open to MDs.

(SJ, I was hoping you would be occupied this evening!!)

MrsSz, I haven't heard anything, and I couldn't find anything about it on NRMPs website. Are you sure they're not just talking about this year's new "all-in" policy?

this is roughly the time when the huge influx of US grads all come into the match (ACA made room for many more med school slots but no more residency slots). Could get VERY interesting, and very disheartening for any IMG.

I just asked DH about this and he says "oh yeah, I heard something about that..." His hosp residency programs start this July, and they chose to affiliate with a DO school because the requirements are less stringent than MD residencies. I wonder how this will affect that. Thanks for the links, SS.

DH is a DO student matching in 2015 -- the single match does start in 2015 from what we understand, and it doesn't seem to change anything about who can apply for what. Osteopathic residencies will still only be for DOs (although we have heard that in the future there may be an option for MDs to take an osteopathic supplement if they want access to those residencies?) and DOs can match into MD residencies if they took the USMLE or if the residency program accepts the COMLEX. Many programs do accept the COMLEX, some don't. All it does is put everyone into the same match rather than having them a month or so apart.

It seems that it wouldn't be that hard for programs to select for MDs or DOs to fit their needs. Programs that are only looking for DOs could choose to only interview and rank DOs on their match list.
