I just broke my $40 target blender, and I normally have smoothies for breakfast most days. So I need a new one, but can't spend much money. I only broke the plastic part that screws on to the bottom of the pitcher, everything else is fine. I wonder if I could find a thrift-store replacement for the pitcher or the part... Recommendations? Anyone have a favorite brand or model? DH talked about the Ninja (?) but we haven't exactly been frugal the last couple weeks so I don't know that we can do that. But I really need my smoothies, I'm so into winter comfort food right now that they've become one of my primary sources of fruits & veggies.

We have a Ninja and it's one badass mofo. Love that thing. It's VERY durable and effective.

This is very good to know. I didn't know whether to believe the hype.

DH has a protein smoothie almost everyday and the Ninja is the only blender that holds up well to the use AND DD1's semi-challenged dish washing abilities.

The blade comes out for cleaning really easily, but doesn't dislodge at the wrong time. It's pretty user friendly.

We don't use a blender every day or anything, but the ONLY thing I would care about would be that the drive parts are metal, and not plastic (it sounds from what you said like what broke on yours is part of the drive, which was plastic). From reading reviews on amazon, it looks like the ninja has plastic drive parts. If I were in the market for a new blender, I'd seriously consider this one: http://www.amazon.com/Oster-BVCB07-Z.../dp/B002RBXHSC

The drive parts are a combo of hard rubber (top part on the motor unit), crazy hard plastic (bottom part of carafe), and metal/same crazy hard plastic on the inside of the blender where the blades attach.

The cogs that fit together between the motor unit and the carafe have deeper "teeth" than any other blender we've owned. It doesn't slip, at all. That hasn't always been our experience with other designs. Also, the multiple blades inside the carafe seem to do a better job mixing/blending than others we've tried, even better than more powerful units.

I have bought blender replacement parts, they're really cheap and easy. I will try to find the site I used.

Alternately, my mom gave me this mini blender (well, in white): http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Beach...dp/B002V8ZEXW/

I was skeptical but it works surprisingly well for single smoothies, small batches of hummus or pesto, etc.

It might have been this one, I remember it was a general appliance parts store that looked like it had barely oozed out of the 90s. But prices were great and shipping was quick. http://www.householdappliance.com/blenderparts.html

The Ninja is the best blender/food processor gadget I've ever owned, bar none. I just looked and there's a $54 version available on QVC. That looks like the kind we have, although I bought mine at Target in the "As seen on TV" section a few years back. Can't recommend it enough.

Awesome! I think one of the jar bases they have is just what I need, I just need to find my model number. Now I feel stupid that I didn't think of that before. Looks like I can get a $6 fix and not have to replace it right now. Woo!

This is probably out of your price range but Vitamix is the god of blenders. I got a refurbished one and saved about $200, but it was still $$. It sure makes one amazing smooth smoothie. I've been making smoothies with kale a lot. No chunks or bits, just creamy yummy.

That's really amazing... I throw a lot of frozen spinach in mine and I definitely get some little chunks. It doesn't really bother me, but it would be nice to get it less chunky. I wonder if I could blanch and freeze some kale to put in mine...

We have the Vitamix too. Even grinds up the blackberry seeds, but is not cheap (Xmas gift from my parents). We have a magic bullet to part with if that interests you.

OK, so I guess that I'm replacing the blender part for now, and planning to save up for a Vitamix or a Ninja! Thanks you guys!
