I think y'all need to shut your cicada hating pieholes and recognize them for the harmless& facinating creatures that they are. Says the gal who truly has perspective on what bugs should be hated... bark scorpions, africanized honey bees& fire ants! ' nuf said

I like them!!! They came out when ds8 was born-- the 17 year cicada. In Maryland. So I guess there are 2 cycles of 17 year cicadas??? I also heard of 7-year cicadas-/ another cycle. Those were mild. The 17 year ones can be intense.

Anyway they were fun, only present in old growth areas (our development was circa 1986 so we didn't have too many in our neighborhood).

I remember driving back and forth to the hospital for NICU visits etc with the cicadas keeping up with the car on the beltway-- lol. They are big, can fly fast, and are pretty much blind so they fly all over the place with no rhyme or rhythm.

I plan to take a trip to tre DC area in may of 2021 for ds8s 17th bday and to visit the cicadas!!!

I am in the Peggy camp... cicadas don't skeeve me at all! I do loathe June bugs; one once landed on my head and was pinching/biting/stinging, whatever they do, to my scalp!!!I was 12 or 13,@ the time.
I think my brother finally just squished it to get it to stop...so THE ptsd, from that experience, sealed the deal on my hatred of those little winged beasts!

Mayflies skeeve me out. Plus they stink like crazy. Along the river they are so thick, it is revolting, they swarm over everything and did I mention the smell?

To me, the interesting thing about the cicada cycle is that it represents a clarity about distant times and places. I remember distinctly the summer the cicadas came when I was a teenager. I remember camping with the hum of their music all night long. I also remember our first summer back in Ohio when they were here last time and my kids were little. Their cycle is long enough that it is memorable. The song of the cicadas would make for a good literary device.

Lol, I love you Suz!! Dh and I were just talking how its nice to be by our trees as they are blooming and not have the entire tree humming with bees. And I haven't had to say, "get your shoes on, it's scorpion season"

Not really but you start seeing them more frequently as its starting to warm up. Same with the rattlers. Gila monsters mate in April so you see them more too

OMG, here I was trying to reassure my mom that midwest bugs couldn't possibly be as awful as SoFL bugs. If y'all don't shut up, I'll never persuade her to move.

But they only last a week or so. And they may not be bad by you. They specifically breed along major waterways.

My city is right on the Mississippi River. They are only bad right next to it, once you get more than 4-5 blocks from it, they thin out to tolerable levels.

I'll be on the Missouri River. I suppose we'll have to send her to my brothers for a week of so when they come.
