I was going to ask you about the kids -- DD used to have adorable ringlets, and I did a sort of Curly Girl method with her, but as she's grown it's gotten less curly and my mom started leaving brushes here when she'd visit, so we fell into bad habits. Last night in the bath and this morning when I combed I tried to take more care and got a few curls back. Do any of the kids have your hair type? What do you use beyond shampoo?

D's hair is probably most like mine...though his feels coarser than mine is. He keeps it fairly short, and he's a sweaty boy so I don't fuss with it too much beyond washing and conditioning. I use the TooShea conditioner (for me and the kids). K's hair is stick straight and fine. Shampoo only for him, though if he knows I conditined the others, or I feel like it, I'll condition his. P's hair wants to be curly. Desparately. But she's too little to not fuss with it, and we pull the front back most days. I try to pull it back without messing up the curl, my mom brushes the heck out of it. (For my mom being a hairdresser, she sure knows nothing about curly hair daily care.) Her hair is fine and I think the TooShea might be too rich for her. But I condition it anyway. I've tried to put product in her hair and I don't like the way it comes out....again, I think my stuff is too heavy for her hair....and she's only 3! She doesn't need product! Usually I'll throw in a little extra TooShea as a leave-in. (So I wash, rinse, condition [nickle sized amount], rinse and then put in more conditioner [pea size amount] as a leave in. I do this to my hair most days as well [I use more for my thick hair].)
Everyone's hair gets combed when the conditioner is in. I put the conditioner in, let it sit a bit while I wash their/my body and then I comb the conditioner through. I don't comb or brush girl hair after that point. I'll comb the boys' hair after they're dressed.
ETA: I use Hair Cleansing Cream, TooShea Conditioner*, Rockin' Ringlets* and Sprialicious Styling Gel. And as an aside, I love the Oil Blend for Softer Hair as a lotion for my legs, arms and body.
* I go through these about twice as fast as the other two.
Seriously people, check out the website. http://www.jessicurl.com/Last edited by Michele; 12-12-2013, 11:57 AM.Mom of 3, Veterinarian

DD1's hair used to be very similar to mine (crazy amount wavy hair), just darker and a little more coarse. Between her weird thyroid crap, dyeing her hair, and frequently heat styling, her hair has become very dry and brittle. She only washes once a week with Olive Oil shampoo/conditioner and is pretty religious about getting regular trims, but I don't think it will make much difference until we get her thyroid straightened out.
DD2 has a ton of stick-straight, baby fine, light auburn-ish hair. It's really beautiful. She doesn't like fussy styling, so it's probably best that her hair needs a great cut that can do most of the heavy lifting of the style. It just won't keep a curl and adding any products makes it look like she's in desperate need of a shower.
DS' hair is similar to DH's. Same color, stick straight, and wiry. He prefers a buzz cut, which is a good choice. He gets dandruff and super dry scalp when his hair is any longer. I'm not sure why that makes a difference, but it's HUGE.

Have you thought of a perm maybe? I had pretty straight hair with a slight wave growing up, then it got wavier and a while back it started to curl in some places and almost stick straight in others so I got a perm that was great. Recently my hair got even curlier and I got another perm that looks...exactly the same as it did before the perm. So I'm thinking maybe they work better for more difficult waves? I know some people don't like the chemicals though.

I have wavy hair and I belong to a Facebook group for wavy haired people. It's nice to get ideas about products and techniques. A lot of people on the board like using a homemade flax seed gel, and many people buy it from one woman on etsy. I'm really close to getting some but haven't yet. People seem to get good results though. I like Jessicurl, although I've only used confident coils. I also like Kinky Curly shampoo (called Come Clean) and conditioner (called Knot Today). I have a really hard time styling wavy in the winter though because the dry air zaps my hair of all its natural wave.Wife to a urologist; Mom to 2 wonderful kiddos

I ordered the Jessicurl products today! It probably won't make too much difference on my hair because it's so freaking long right now, but I'm getting it hacked off in the spring. I'll let you guys now how it works on my girls. Cate looks like a lion in the morning and Alex looks like medusa.

Sephora doesn't have my Ouidad gel in the stores anymore according to the sales guy at the mall. He sold me something called hair pudding. It is lightweight and the front of my hair looks fine, but the back is so frizzy. I asked a good friend who does my kids' hair her thoughts. She said to order the gel online. I found it on Amazon tonight so hopefully it will arrive by Tuesday. Ugh.Veronica

My own hair can't make up its mind...I've always been jealous of people with straight hair, or actual curls.

Seriously, if I could, I'd do infomercials for the Jessicurl line. I always get coupon codes emailed to me if anyone wants to try it. I bought the trial pack and I'm hooked. I've been using the line exclusively for over 2 years and her newest gel is AWESOME.
I use 4 products total ("shampoo", conditioner, potion and gel). Apply it all in the shower, scrunch, plop and then when it's time to leave the house, I take it down and leave. No frizz, no crunch, just soft curls that hold their shape in hot humid Florida. I get slightly less curl definition if I forget to deep condition in the winter. My hair is very very dry apparently.
I laugh when I see the "curly hair problems" lists floating around, because my curls are so easy to handle now. The newer iMSN members and lurkers are probably like, who is this crazy sales troll... .Wife and #1 Fan of Attending Adult & Geriatric Psychiatrist.

Awesome, thank you! The Jessicurl stuff works fabulously on my girls and gives them bouncy spirals. Me? I look like I belong in an 80s hair band, lol. Maybe because my hair is so long? I think I missed the part in your description "plop, and take it down". I've just been scrunching. Off to buy the book!

I'm so glad it's working for your girls!! I get really full curls if I go to bed with my hair wet but carefully fanned out over my pillow lying on my back. And if I'm careful not to move when I sleep (I don't move much anyway.)
It took me a few months to figure out how much product I needed. I use a lot more of the Rockin' Ringlets than of the Spiralicious Gel. And if I use too much I get stringy curls. Too little they frizz then fall. And if I touch my hair too much it'll go flat and straighten. So I think there's more of a learning curve with adult hair.Mom of 3, Veterinarian
