    When I was a kid....
we went on Christmas Eve, before midnight mass, "stole" a Christmas tree (there are usually places giving them away), and decorated it. That tree had all of our homemade ornaments, popcorn strings, fruit loops, etc. Before Mass, my mom always let us open one gift, but if she had bought jewelry that we could wear to church or jammies, that's what we got.

Eventually, we'll continue that tradition (though no live tree - DD is way too allergic), but for now, we just do the gift on Christmas Eve. It's always jammies.
In the morning, they can go to each other's rooms, but no one can wake us up or go downstairs until 7am. This is kind of a joke because I get so excited, I can hardly sleep Christmas Eve, and end up basically hiding in my room until DH will wake up. I leave one wrapped book by each of the kids' doors, and they can open those while they wait.

We do stockings first, and Santa gifts, which are unwrapped, under our tree in the family room. Next comes breakfast - something easy.

When the kids start to get restless, we open gifts to each other, which are under our living room tree. We take turns.

When we do our extended family party, which is over 30 people, we don't take turns opening one by one, but the person opening a gift has to make sure the gift-giver is paying attention.

DH is very much a Christmas morning person. He's upset that he's on call Christmas Day and worried about when the girls will open presents. News flash - they don't know how to read a calendar He is also big on no presents under the tree until Christmas morning. Right now, the Little People nativity is under the tree for DD to play with, but that's it. Depending on when we open presents (after nap on Christmas Eve or AM on the day), I'll bring all the presents up from the basement. We let DD1 open at her leisure and play with things as she goes along. It's pretty overwhelming for her! DD2 got 2 presents from us, as there is really not much to get a 5 month old that we don't already have! We got nothing for the dog this year - we can take a rawhide out of the closet and wrap it up

Once the girls get a bit older, we are going to start doing trips on/for Christmas. Neither of us like my parents' "maybe you'll get that for Christmas" attitude which made Christmas very much about what we got. We want to make Christmas about being with family and enjoying an adventure together.

The 12 year olds still play webkinz. Mostly to "help" their younger siblings, but I think they like it lol. Santa always gives them a webkinz animal and that buys us time while they register it etc etc. Our kids are good about not waking me up, but dh is always up by 530 so it's hard to get up before him!!
Oh no! I remember getting in so much trouble as a kid when I found gifts. My mom eventually stared keeping them in a neighbors basement - or hiding them so well in our house that even she couldn't find them on Christmas Eve - was always fun getting something she found in February.

Our local storage locker place always has an ad with something about "Santa stores his presents here" My mom found Santa's closet when she was 6, and showed my aunt who was 4. As a result of having Christmas "ruined" at such a young age, my aunt NEVER told her kids there was no Santa. They were far too old when they finally stopped believing.

I never even thought about a storage locker. Kind of pain to drop off and pick up - but actually a very good idea.

My brother is 5 years older...I knew around or before I was four...it never ruined Christmas! I still played along and I felt like it was more magical because I was in on such a delicious secret, haha. Until I was probably 16 or so, my parents and I would play the game where I would continue to insist there was a Santa in response to my parents repeating Santa wasn't real!

When my kids say they don't believe in santa, I just say, "oh well. That's too bad. I guess santa will only bring gifts to those who believe." Viola-- their belief is restored.

This was my mom. And growing up the majority of the gifts were from Santa. So these were fighting words for sure!

The beauty of a storm shelter is it's a great hiding spot for gifts (you know, aside from being life saving and all).

This is the first place we've lived that I don't have a present buddy. Everywhere else, I've kept a friend's presents, and she's kept mine.

My parents always tried to make Christmas morning last as long as possible. It was frustrating when I was little, but I grew to love it and I hope to continue it when DH and I have kids. We would have to wait until Mom and Dad were awake (usually 7:30 or so) to get up and then get completely dressed and ready before going downstairs. Then we opened stockings (free-for-all style), had breakfast (Mom always made "Jesus's birthday cake" coffee cake), and then took turns opening presents under the tree. It's always nearly lunchtime before we finish, and I love having lunch and then "rediscovering" everything after lunch and starting to play with it.

                            Man I love Christmas!

We do Christmas Eve at the in-laws. It's chaos because MIL just hands the kids their presents and lets them go nuts. I never know who gave what! The we got to Mass the night. We have our kids take turns opening gifts in the morning around 8 or 9. We don't get up early. At my family celebration, we eat first, then pass out gifts. Adults open as we chat while finishing our meal. Kids open after everyone finishes eating. Youngest to oldest. Yes, my kids are first, fourth, and last/sixth. LOL
