Yes, but can always revert any photo to original. Not sure if there is a way to batch do it. You can probably still access the originals someway too but I've never bothered trying. I don't really use iPhoto anymore and stick to Lightroom for keeping things organized. I've outgrown being able to keep everything on my computer!

I don't really use iPhoto either for any editing. I like the Photostream function so things we take with any phone camera show up on any device/computer and the facial recognition is pretty great once you put in enough family photos. Otherwise, I use Adobe products and keep my files offsite.

That's where it sucks for you The nice thing about iPhoto and Adobe products is they have "non destructive" editing, so you can edit all day long, but the original image is still intact--the edits are stored in "sidecar" files (at least for adobe, but I imagine iPhoto is similar). It's great for anyone who's into photography and actually saves space on your computer. The downside is getting to the originals can be a PITA. I have to be really careful with my Lightroom library because if you break the "connection" between the original file and the edits (say, by moving the file on your hard drive manually outside of Lightroom) it's a whole world of hurt to fix.

But don't let that confuse you--if you didn't edit anything, you still need to follow the same process, unless you are trying to export EVERYTHING at once. Then it might be worth trying to find a workaround. But given it sounds like you are exporting to CDs, I'd export a particular batch of pics at a time and go from there.

You can also go to the "Pictures" folder in Finder, right click on iPhoto Library and then click "Show Package Contents". The you should be able to click and drag your photo files wherever you want them. Good luck!

Do you have AppleCare on the computer by any chance? I've found their phone support line phenomenally helpful at times like these.

Lady foot-- can you open those photos on a PC then? They aren't "iPhoto" encrypted?

Honestly, I haven't tested it, but if you choose the ones from the "Masters" folder, I don't think they would be encrypted. They're just the regular .JPG files, or whatever format you used when you originally imported them. I'd check for you, but I'm in a house of all Macs at the moment.

We have a PC. I should check. Thanks for the tip, though. I feel like I have to go to google and apple forums for so many things to figure out how to do stuff I already knew how to do on the PC. I'm glad my kids are learning both PC and Mac--- bc who knows what will be prevalent in 20 years. Something totally different maybe. Google will run the world by then.

It's all going to the cloud, baby. No more operating systems to worry about in your local machine.

Let me know whether or not it works! I don't want to go around giving bad advice if it doesn't.

I finally checked-- it does work (but my PC is in terrible shape. I don't want to deal with that hot mess right now). I could open the JPG files. I do think it's a bit awkward because of the way Apple groups the pictures when you go to the masters files--- it's not really grouped via Event as it is in the iPhoto library. The system is rigged to keep you using the iPhoto system...

Anyone have tips about how they back up their iPhoto files? It's probably here in this thread. Cheri does this often I think. She's my hero, but I can not get my act together to back up photos!!!

Ah yes... Cheri did cover how they do it.

Still don't know if I'm going to get my act together lol!

Is there any kind of DVD for backing up to that's "better"? I have had some issues with backing up to disk before. I'm guessing we could do it to the portable hard drive...

Cheri when you back up from the iPhoto library by exporting, you can open the files on the PC? That's interesting because I assumed they'd only be able to be opened through iPhoto. I'll have to try it...

                            Peggy -
We back up using an external HD, and a cloud-type service that we pay $5/mo for.

Yes if you do an export it just exports them as JPEGs not as an iPhoto library. You can back-up the whole library, which we also do, because it backs up the faces, etc. So we have a back-up that we could use in a mac and we have a back-up that we could open on anything.

Adrianne is the cloud service worth it? Do you think? Have you had to use it?

I am not as tech savvy as I should be... But I did to grow up with these newfangled devices such as digital tvs and computers lol. My graphing calculator was pretty cutting edge in junior year.
