Played violin from age 4-20 and was concertmaster of my HS orchestra freshman and sophomore year (a little prodigy kid came along and beat me out junior year). My parents knew before I was born they wanted me to play violin so they would play the suzuki tapes for me when I was still in my mom's belly. This could be part of the reason that I can play a piece after hearing it just once or twice through -- I rely much more on my ears than sheet music.
My dad is very musical and was in a band growing up so we always had lots of musical instruments in the house. Picked up the guitar around age 13 just for fun, self-taught/taught by my dad. Still play it occasionally. At 15 I decided I wanted to be in the school jazz band and they needed a bass player so I learned bass guitar so I could join them. Took piano lessons in college but never got very serious. Bought a ukulele last year and sit in my rocking chair on the back porch and play for the dogs most afternoons when the weather's nice. Learning to play the banjo is still on my bucket list. My dad has one but I just haven't had the time to go over and have him teach me yet.
