I got sucked into a vaccine debate today (God help me). I wasn't actually going to say anything, but then a poster had to blankety state that "even doctors don't vaccinate their children." O.o

I replied that I had yet to meet an MD or DO that doesn't, to which said poster replied "Doctor Oz".

I will wait to post what I wrote as a response, but my question to you all is this: What are your thoughts on the good doc? I have some, but I'd rather hear your responses first.
(If you'd rather not respond publicly, I can ask a mod to move this to a private forum).

He sells himself out to the highest bidder. I'm sure he has something good to say once in a while...even a broken clock is right twice a day.

          ST - honestly, I don't know.
I had hoped he wasn't a real MD when I was formulating my response. I saw that he was, and adjusted accordingly, but I still believe my point was strong.

Wait, so he throws his wife under the bus? He would have vaccinated but he's in a happy marriage and his wife refused? Wth, did I read that right?

Just another product of Oprah like Dr Phil and others but this guy is like a snake oil salesman and uses the md for credibility.

I hate Dr. Oz...he will say anything for ratings. DH hates him too.

My mother loves him and quotes him all the flipping time.

I do not watch tv so I really had no opinion about Dr. Oz other than thinking that he has gone the way of most famous physicians.

The few times I have caught a glimpse of his show (usually waiting in a healthcare type office BTW), he seems to be always selling the great benefits of smoothies. Lol.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

You really can't change people's minds about these things through a debate. It leads to defensiveness and digging their heels in further. I think real trust is built through personal interactions, history and repeated patience. Deep down most people are scared and want to protect their children as best as they perceive how. Real dialogue can only come from honoring that place. Some people will never vax. I have two families in my school, and I don't want to lose the war. I hope they are willing to establish a trusting relationship with me outside of this hot topic, and I will do my best to keep them informed of outbreaks and safe.

For me, it was more about the person's blanket statement that "we", as a community, don't vaccinate, so the average guy "shouldn't either." It was frightening to hear someone say something like that.
I didn't know that people honestly believe my husband and his colleagues to be "selling something" they themselves wouldn't use for their own families.

I had no idea about the Dr. Oz thing until I asked the question to the original poster. To me, it's just another talking head, spreading misinformation, which (to be honest) bothers me, but isn't worth the energy to debate on correctness.
I *did* take issue with someone speaking on my behalf out of their behind, though.

                        Ahhhh, pregnancy.

I've never been able to sit through more than a few minutes of his show, it's mostly BS.

I guess I'm just floored by the total lack of trust for medicine in general, as well as the gross generalizations that I'm hearing regarding patient care and well-being.

Someone else has brought up Dr. Sears now in the post, and stated that doctors make money off of patients and *that's* why there are more vaccines/a huge push to vaccinate children.

Why do dawkters get this kind of attention and following, but people think my husband is questionable?
                              It's mind boggling.
