  • Forbes: Down with the Match?

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/theapoth...-minted-m-d-s/

This is an interesting article that appeared on Forbes.com a couple weeks ago. It has a pretty good overview explanation of The Match process for those outside of medicine and then discusses the inefficiencies and failures of the Match system. Some of the statistics quoted are rather shocking -- like 25% of the applicants did not match. TWENTY-FIVE PERCENT?! The author also compares the Match to sorority rush .... which, unfortunately, I think is a pretty apt description of the process. What are your thoughts?

Sorority rush is such an apt process, I actually used that to explain it to my sorority sisters.

I have always explained match as going through rush. Except that when you are trying to get in a particular sorority or fraternity, there is always a human behind it all to make sure you come out alright...may not be your top choice but the greek life ppl are at least looking out for you. The match....hmmm...not.so.much.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

I actually have a thread on this somewhere on here. Some of the authors statistics are a little misleading

Yeah, that's a screwy stat. She includes people who withdraw from one match to enter another. (DO/MD)

Exactly how I felt about it the first time I learned about the match. A guy I dated when I was still an undergrad "ohhh youre going to be in a sorority too!!! Too bad you don't get to jump into the arms of your program from the stage" (yes I actually said that, and worse yet, meant it lol)

I'm totally with you on the people looking out for you side of things. There probably is just about the same amount of drama in a rush class as a residency class lol

I loathe this article, but it's def like sorority rush...if all of the PMNs were huge nerds.

People not matching isn't really a match problem. It's a residency spot problem.

As much as I like to complain about it and all the uncertainty, I don't really think there was a better alternative.

Granted, I'm happy with the results. Maybe she isnt
