  • Wegmans?

Recently I saw that our area is getting two Wegman's. Apparently this is a Big Deal because it's supposedly "awesome". We have crappy chains here - Kroger, Food Lion, Martins - but do have a TJs and Whole Foods. At home we have Harris Teeter which I've always considered awesome and before we moved it was essentially a one-stop-shop for us, other than TJs items we liked specifically. Great meats, great produce, reasonable prices.

Everyone is all "YAY WEGMANS!!" when this news broke, but I remain skeptical. Wawa really let me down, and I spent 4 years in undergrad hearing MD, NJ, NY, and PA natives talk about how much they missed Wawa. 45 min west of here there are Harris Teeters, but something about the local grocery store chain that was bought out someone/thing prohibts HT from coming here (or maybe it's because there are so many Kroger's and now they are owned by the same?)

Who knows. Anyway - with our luck an awesome, brand new Wegmans will popup right as we're pulling out of town with a moving van for residency...but on the off chance that we're here...is this exciting?

I've still never been to one, but I went to a party with catered foods from wegmans - it was awesome.

I love HT too! We only have one chain here, and then WF & TJs, so I kind if feel your pain. We don't even have Safeway - which I think is way overpriced, but at least they deliver!

That's good to know! I get irrationally excited about grocery shopping/food shopping/cooking, so I love WF and TJs...but honestly depending on how long my grocery list is, I sometimes end up going to 4+ places for everything I need. I won't buy chicken from just anywhere, I've done trial and error with all the chicken at places around here. Produce is hit or miss at our chains, and I just can't/won't pay WF prices for most of it. Then if we need something "regular" or name brand (cereals or cookies or the ice cream we like), we've gotta stop at Kroger. When we lived in NC it was 30min-1hr in HT and we were done!

Oh I'm the same. I usually just go to 3, but then target for things like cleaning supplies. Oh wait, I go to a small local grocery to buy cold cuts since none of the big stores here sell boars head. So make that 4 freaking grocery stores just to get everything on my list!

Trust, Wegmans is best grocery store evah. TJs has lots of great stuff but Wegmans tops it. It's the only store I'll buy food at. (We don't have a TJs)

Wegman's is amazing...and I'm not a jump-on-the-grocery-bandwagon type of gal (example, don't stone me, but I kinnnnnnnda hate Trader Joe's). Give me Publix and Wegman's in one city and close to me and I'll give you my first born!

Some of the older Wegmans stores are dumpy, but a newer one should be great. We don't have one near us now. I usually do all our shopping at WF, mainly because the meat, fish and produce quality is so good. It is pricey, but we just buy smaller quantities to offset that. Their house 365 house brand products in the middle of the store are very reasonable and often cheaper than regular grocery stores.

Oh I get it - I don't see how people can do ALL of their grocery shopping at TJs. Some of their stuff isn't better or cheaper than a chain grocery store. For example, we don't buy canned stuff there - I can get it cheaper elsewhere - or dried pasta (theirs is more expensive than Kroger!) or any meats. Some of their TJs versions of things aren't good, IMO. We don't like their frozen pizzas or many of their frozen meals, TBH, though we don't eat frozen meals often anyway. It's hit or miss but I do have some staples that I'll ONLY by at TJs because I prefer them.

Interesting. Usually when I go into WF I'm going for the WF-specific things we buy there. I will only buy/eat their chicken. I lust after their meat counter but can't bring myself to buy anything. A few specialty items I've needed for recipes have come from there. I'll have to check out the 365 stuff. Might make my trips there more worthwhile!

First 2 years of med school were spent in an area with mostly shitty grocery stores, so my opinion may be skewed, but Wegmans was like a shining beacon of delicious, reasonably priced food. I was used to small, boutique grocery stores and co-ops so Wegmans turned me off at first with how enormous it was, but I warmed up quickly. The only thing was in our area, the produce was GOOD but not GREAT. I actually still miss it - I have to go to Giant Eagle, Trader Joe's AND Whole Foods just to find the selection I would get at Wegmans.

I agree. I also found a study that compared prices of a bunch of major stores, and WF wasn't even close to the most expensive. It was great to back up my argument with my MIL, who thinks it's absurd that I shop there. I can also walk there, which is great for quick trips.

My only beef with the WF here is that is so freaking packed. I know they have plans to expand, but usually WF is a little bit more of a spa like shopping experience (if you go at an off time), here I often wonder if I'll make it out alive!

Wegman's is the master of the high-low. They have high end, Whole Foods-y stuff and also cheap junk food. Which I appreciate. I've never lived close enough to one to go regularly, but the ones outside of DC (which were new at the time) were really great.
