  • Weird (tough) scenarios that you handle on your own

So, a few seconds ago, a hawk (yes, the bird of prey) flew full speed into my glass door wall. It is now convulsing and dying on my patio.

    1. What the hell does someone do in this situation?

I'm inclined to just let it die and make Chad take care of the carcass when he arrives at home. Bleeeeck.

    2. What are some less than pleasant, weird, or otherwise crazy things that you've had to deal with on your own while your spouse was gone? Cause we all know that they're gone a lot!

We've had fire alarms go off for so long that I finally called the fire department. And those damned batteries always die in the middle of the night on a call night, am I right?

I had to change the guts out of a toilet on my own. I've had to do just about every kind of home maintenance/ car problem on my own.

Too many to count, but the one that stands out is when our dog got hit by a skunk as he was coming back into the house one weekday morning (the skunk was apparently under the steps to our deck) and my son didn't realize what had happened and let the dog in. The smell was everywhere....I had to call in, my son had to stay home, and I spent the next 11 hours un-skunking. By the time DH got home, all was well and he couldn't tell anything had happened. (How nice for him.) This happened over 2 years ago and I still have PTSD about skunks!

Last summer we had a tree removed in our backyard and found out too late there was a nest of baby squirrels. We were hoping the mom would come back for them, but a few hours later they hadn't. We were about to leave on a trip and I felt so awful about leaving those poor baby squirrels to die in the heat on our porch.

In the next 2 hours I somehow managed to find a squirrel rehabber that wasn't too far out of the way on our trek from Dallas to Houston and we dropped them off as we left!

Heidi - see if there's a wildlife rescue for birds of prey in your area. Call and have someone pick up the bird (if it lives) and they can take it to a wildlife vet for rehabbing.

This thread is great, by the way. Home repairs/all insurances/wills/utilities/bills/investing/medical appointments/lawn care/car care/animal care and issues/budgeting/travel arrangements, and gestating.

Yes, This ^. A few years ago we hit a turkey vulture outside of Ocala. We actually talked to a cop who called the UF animal rescue / control. Maybe you could call non emergent police and see who they refer.

Whenever we had birds fly into our plate glass windows my mom would cover them with a dish cloth and move them gently to a shady spot under a bush. 9 times out of 10 they would come to and emerge on their own a little while later. Her theory was that just shielding them from the sun/overheating and putting them in a safe place was usually enough.

I can't think of anything too interesting that I've had to handle on my own, except for a couple dead mice that the cat got. I HATE dealing with those, ugh. And there was this stretch of time in our last apartment (due, I think, to the sink/toilet/medicine cabinet placement) where things kept falling in the open toilet and I had to fish them out repeatedly. Of course the solution is to keep the toilet closed, but stuff would fall in every damn time the thing was left open.

+1. I would also add all cleaning to that list. Can't remember the last time I asked DH to do dishes, fold laundry, clean a toilet, vacuum, etc., etc.

I've done most of two bathroom remodels on my own. Tearing down wallpaper, removing and replacing toilets and vanities, removing old vinyl flooring (seriously one of he hardest things I've done!), tiling the floors. It would have been nice to have more help, but if I waited for DH, we would still have half-finished bathrooms.

Yea my mind immediately went to domestic tasks and my love for complaining about how I have to do everything. Here's a fun story for how things have progressed on my homefront:

Husband came into the room saying our down coats were on the coat rack getting squished. This is one of his THINGS. Down can NOT get squished. He made the same statement about three times as I stared blankly at him pretending I didn't know what he was trying to say. Finally he gave me a very pointed disapproving look, to say I haven't done my job correctly, and walked away. Later I saw he took them down from the coat rack 'for me' and laid them on an arm chair....which happens to be right next to a very empty closet. Obviously, my man is too busy for such menial tasks as hanging up our coats.

5 days later you better bet those coats are still sitting on the chair. I'll wait for the right moment and then chastise him for performing half of a 30 second task.

I once had to deal with sewage seeping up through our showers all by myself. We lived in a rental and when dh was taking a shower, unpleasant water started gurgling back up through the shower. He left for work because he had no time to help sort it out, and I discovered we were having toilet problems too. I had to call and get someone to come out to our rental house to look at the septic lines. It turned out Aidan had flushed a matchbox car down the toilet and it had blocked the line.

On another occasion, I had to call the plumber because our toilet was backed up and I couldn't fix it. It turned out Alex had flushed a remote control for a tv. The plumber was so impressed he asked to keep it and I let him.

When we moved to the US,our moving van was delayed by about 6 weeks. When it finally came, Thomas was at the hospital and had call. It turns out our contract stated that we would remove the boxes etc from the truck ourselves. I had to lock Andrew and Amanda in our bedroom and then carry things in all by myself. I thought I was going to pass out! My neighbor later admitted to watching me and 'almost' coming out to help.

Oz had a seizure on the kitchen floor.
I woke up DS, put both of them in the car, and am now at the vet.
