  • Tipping - WTH -uggghhhhh

I know we have talked about tipping before and I am totally on board with the fact that you should tip your waitstaff since they make less than minimum wages. However, I just saw a chart that said I should also tip between 15-20% to my hairstylist, massage therapists, taxi driver, mani/pedi person and animal groomer. Whaaaaat? Do these people make less than minimum wage too?

I f-ing hate tipping. Not because I am cheap but because it makes no sense to me. I should tip my dog groomer but not my plumber/electrician/handyman. I should tip my massage therapist but why not my physical,therapist/acupuncturists/chiropractor too? Why should I tip the cab driver 20% (unless s/he has totally gone waaaay beyond the call of duty)? I get that my hair stylists has to pay overhead and that what I pay her is not all profit. Sooo, why not just charged me more? No one tips me for doing the j-o-b I was hired to do. If I go beyond the call of duty, I get an email/card maybe some cookies, etc.

Ughhhh. Maybe I should have just posted this on the rant page - sorry folks.

How do you rationalize all the tipping?

I feel you on this. It bugs me that you tip for coffee at Starbucks but not McDonalds ... I know they're above minimum at Starbucks. I never know who I'm supposed to tip for what and how much. Yah, I know there's probably an app for that ... but seriously, no one ever tipped me for a job well done.

I tip hairdressers and nail techs. I don't tip everyone else.

How do you get away with it? Especially now with the Square, it automatically makes you choose between 15,20 & 25% before you can complete the transaction.

I have never tipped at Starbucks. I use the app on my phone to pay, and just pay what it costs.

The only place I frequent that has square is a local coffee shop. I usually pay cash and just put in some of my change as tip in the tip jar. If I pay by card and it asks, iirc it gives the option of none, or specify your own amount.

My mind is still blown that you can pay with an app on your phone.

                  THE HELL?

I wouldn't be frequenting an establishment that offered me an i-device pre-populated with tip. Nope nope nope nope nope.

I've been meaning to post about this very topic. EVERY F'ING ice cream stand I've taken the kids to this summer has had a tipping jar. WTF. You're college kids making 8 bucks an hour. Please. I go to pick up a pizza and they have both a tipping jar, and if you pay with a credit card, it has a line for a tip. It's not even delivered pizza!!

                    It bugs me.

If you're at an establishment that's using an iPad/square to pay via tablet or phone, they should definitely have an option for "no tip." A place I frequent for lunch uses an iPad to pay and they always have the 10%, 15% or No Tip option. Not cool if they've somehow bypassed the "none" option. I don't know how I feel about tipping. In restaurants, of course, but elsewhere? Ugh, I don't know. I get so uncomfortable and embarrassed. DH and I had a couples massage on our anniversary and we paid for his with our debit card, and paid for mine with a gift card I'd been given for graduation. When he went to give his masseuse a cash tip, mine looked at us expectantly and it was just so...awkward. He said "we're paying for hers with a card so we'll have to tip on that. Paying different ways, you know." It's like...don't stand there looking at me with a look that says "uh...where's mine??" At least give me the benefit of the doubt and if/when you realize later on that I didn't tip you after paying with a card, then talk shit about us and what terrible customers we are.

I don't know for sure, but I feel like haircuts/colors are SOOO expensive, but I have no way of knowing what someone's overhead is, so when I tack on an extra 20% to a haircut that's already running me $75...it hurts. It's the primary reason I don't color or get highlights. That will jack up the service price to $125+ and next thing I know I'm tipping $25. Maybe I just feel cheap now because we only have one income. I used to never think about it or at least didn't hesitate.

I will say, I am happy to tip my waxer. I give her over 20% and it still makes the total price of the service what I consider reasonable. The girl is waxing vag all day long so I mean...I think I can throw her $10 because she's nice, fast, clean, and thorough.

I've gotten to the point now that every place you go gives you a receipt with a tip line and leaving it blank makes me feel like a glaring asshole. Why am I tipping you for coffee that I poured myself from a carafe? All you did was get a scone from a try and put it in a bag. I've never once considered tipping when Cooper has had a bath or a nail trim. Oops? If anyone in dog care deserves a tip, it's the vet techs. They are the ones who have to take the rectal temps and get stool samples.

I've never seen the tip prepopulated before. That seems sleezy to me.

I tip waitstaff, hairstylist, nail techs, cabs, and occasionally loose change or a dollar at coffee shops. That's pretty much it. If I get food to go, I generally don't tip or leave more than a dollar. It all frustrates me too though, and I hate tipping.

I've been able to write in my own tip on Square many a time!

I had to laugh when my salon got Square, because I realized that I had been giving my esthetician a 30% tip! She deserves every penny of it, but math is obviously not my strong point.

                            I'm a tipper though...

I'm also a tipper, especially if it's really good service or they're working alone on a Saturday night. My waxer is a single mom so I tend to tip a lot although I heard you don't have to tip if it's the owner of the establishment? My bang trims are $5 and it's a lady in a barbershop so I end up giving her $10. I got my nails done last week and it was $15 but she took the rest of the $20 I handed her...wtf? That woman, I will not be going back to. Actually, I rarely get my nails done so I guess no worries there.
