Deciding what to keep and what to throw

I went through and kept all of the letters from my first boyfriend. I tossed the leather satchel after finding the matching leather pencil case in good condition. I'll keep that. I also kept a couple of my german books. I found a bunch of my poems (from my dark period during adolescence) and Amanda and I had a good laugh reading them. I kept those too.

It feels good to get rid of stuff, but I'm emotionally attached.

Maybe you need to permit yourself a rubbermaid container for memories. What you can fit in, stays. This gives you a concrete limit of keepsakes.

I'm definitely of the mind set to get rid of it and live simply. Someone else can be enjoying those wonderful things. They aren't doing anyone any good. If I'm super emotional about something, I mentally mark it for my next go round. If I haven't done anything with it by the next purge, it is out of there.

No seriously. Count how many times in the last decade you went to the basement to look through your memories. Travel simply, my friend.

Yeah, I generally think if you have to ask, you can probably toss it. But I rarely if ever regret getting rid of something. More often I regret ever having bought something, stored it, and moved it around unnecessarily.
