  • How do you handle the post Halloween candy?

My two oldest went with their neighbor and returned with whole pillow cases of candy. Full sized twix, butterfingers, snickers. The younger two have are a reasonable stash they will burn through in a couple of days.

I'm always torn on just letting them rip through it, or let them binge for one day and then confiscate the remaining to ration out. When they start eating a lot of candy the get hyper, cranky and refuse to eat full meals. When the youngest ones run out of candy they will start strealing from the older kids and start fights. If the youngest don't succeed in locating their older sibs' candy stashes they melt down because they don't have any candy and they see their old sibs still eating candy. It always feels like a no-win situation.

I sorted all the candy last night. One gallon sized bag of kosher candy/nuts ok for K2's school lunches. One gallon sized bag of nut free/unkosher ok for K1's lunches. One sandwich sized bag of skittles, M&M's, and smarties for "get in your car seats without making me ask forty times" bribes for the car. I'll give them treats in their school lunches for a few weeks until the candy is gone.

A friend lets her kids keep 4-5 pieces and the rest can be exchanged for a toy (like the Heartlake Shopping Mall).

Apparently, I eat it by sneaking a piece at a time.

My kids used to get a ton of candy. One year in residency we had, literally, 50lbs of candy.
Now a days, where we take them trick or treating, there are SO MANY kids that they come home with less than half a bucket full. It's great!
Long ago I used to throw it out, or ration it. Now, I don't even try. Eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner for two days. I don't care and I'm not fighting about it.

My kids don't really like how they feel after eating a lot of candy, so they're already self-rationing. DS informed us he wasn't going to have any Halloween candy because he got treats at school, but we convinced him to have one after dinner. DD doesn't have quite the same self control so we're just keeping her to whatever lead DS displays, for fairness. She likes to count her candies, but then hands me her bag to put away "so she won't be tempted." LOL.

After a few days their favorites will be gone and their interest will peter out a bit, so we'll consolidate everything into one "family" pile and DH will pretty much take care of it. (The man burns a LOT of calories and LOVES candy so it works out.) We might have a few pieces for dessert for the next few weeks, and of course I will be sneaking more than I ought to have as well.

When I was a kid we only had sugar-free sweets at home, so on Halloween we would keep something like 5 pieces and trade the rest for our health food store favorites. Mmm, lemon suckers and crunchy rice peanut butter cups.

I let them eat a lot of it today. Tomorrow, they each pick a few for school lunches, and then we send the rest to the troops (a neighbor has a son in the Marines and sends it over for our neighborhood).

It's their candy, they may do with it as they please I'm not a big believer in rationing or confiscating, that just seems less than fun to me . Our kiddos will eat a good amount for a few days and then will get bored of it and typically by Christmas will throw away the leftovers.

Is it bad that I already ate a bunch of it last night? 😊 I figure at 2, he can only eat so much.

There isn't any trick or treating in our neighborhood so I didn't buy any. O is sharing his with me and dh and we are pretty much tearing through it today. Then it will be gone.

N didn't get that much, but apparently she are A LOT more than I thought she did because she vomited pink twice last night

On the bright said she was all on board for no candy today!
