There are a lot of people in DHs class that come from wealthy families who pay tuition and living expenses for their kids (and did so for undergrad, too). We also know people who are National Health Scholars (or whatever it's called) so they get tuition + stipend. It requires a primary care focus and the 2+ years of service in an under-served community. Pretty sweet deal for those who know for sure they want to go into primary care/know they like under-served/rural medicine. There are some MD/PhDs, too. My eldest step-brother did the MD/PhD route 25 years ago. It was hell on his wife, but they had zero debt at the end of it and they've been living extremely well since.

And I should add that we're debt-free, but since we're 15 years older than a lot of his classmates, we've got that much less time to build up more savings before retirement; we're ahead of the game for first-year attendings, for sure, but not compared to most attendings our age!Sandy
