There are a lot of people in DHs class that come from wealthy families who pay tuition and living expenses for their kids (and did so for undergrad, too). We also know people who are National Health Scholars (or whatever it's called) so they get tuition + stipend. It requires a primary care focus and the 2+ years of service in an under-served community. Pretty sweet deal for those who know for sure they want to go into primary care/know they like under-served/rural medicine. There are some MD/PhDs, too. My eldest step-brother did the MD/PhD route 25 years ago. It was hell on his wife, but they had zero debt at the end of it and they've been living extremely well since.

Ahhh great job. I've been contemplating how to shift my career to be more work from home friendly. Sadly I chose to be an accountant lol

It doesn't look like they are accounting for time spent outside of the hospital still doing work, though. DH spends a whole lot of time at home either reading up for tomorrow or finishing notes from the day. I wonder what this number would look like if they took that into account?

Yeah, harder to do that from home!

And I should add that we're debt-free, but since we're 15 years older than a lot of his classmates, we've got that much less time to build up more savings before retirement; we're ahead of the game for first-year attendings, for sure, but not compared to most attendings our age!

We are in the debt free group too. Family support for DrK before we met and profitable employment for me during most of training. Also started training later.
