Protecting the Christmas Tree

How do you protect the tree from an 11-month old (and the 11-month old from the tree)? I hate to buy some ginormous baby gate thing that looks awful and takes up a lot of space... Is that really my only option? What have you done?

One year we filled big boxes with heavy junk and wrapped them, then surrounded the tree with them instead of a gate. It only worked because DS1 wasn't a climber at the time, though.

DD can't quite climb yet... I feel like that could take up a lot of space but it could work...

Protecting the Christmas Tree

Neither of my kids were climbers, so anything delicate went on the top third of the tree and we decorated the bottom with non-breakable stuff. I think our tree is scratchy enough that our boys didn't find it worth messing with.

Believe it or not, none of my kids have bothered it. It's been through N at 1, 2, and 3 and J at 10 months and now 22 months with no issue. I do keep glass off the bottom. Depending on the kid you might be ok

DD is FEISTY. And she hates it when I redirect her. When I say "No, no, not for playing," and redirect her away from power cords or a potted plant, she gets a devilish little gleam in her eye and goes back twice as hard. Then screams when I stop her. So I'm thinking I need a physical barrier!

I never needed one until DS2. He is on a mission to end his life... 😂

We've never done anything. Six kiddos and maybe a handful of broken ornaments but no biggie. Just put special ornaments up high and get soft ones that they can play with and take on and off the tree. We put a nativity set they can play with under the tree. Lots of special times playing under the tree. I wouldn't worry about blocking it off.
