  • SAHM capsule wardrobe?

    Ok team...

What do I need? I've got the t shirt, jeans, flip flops look down but I look like a damn college student. Plus I've got nice work clothes that will clearly get worn almost never (they are already worn almost never because I work from home). I KNOW some of you are very stylish so please help me.

I need easy, washable and comfortable without looking like a slob. I'm also short (5 feet) but I don't do fancy shoes, etc so would love recommendations for good flats that will hold up but aren't flip flops.

Please help....links, Pinterest, etc are all welcomed. I'm on a budget but I've got a little to spend now before I go on leave.

Me too! I'd love to do a capsule wardrobe and mostly work from home. I'm in the local office on an as needed basis and at meetings some of the time. The rest is done behind the computer screen at my home desk.

I have some cool patterned pants and comfortable skirts and dresses with tights/boots that I use regularly. Where I'm hurting is tops. I can never get the right variety and number of tops to make a business casual wardrobe work. I use the same basics over and over until they die from overuse. It's boring. And stressful.

I don't understand fashionable tops. Lol.

T&S I'm sure it is blasphemy but the Dr Scholl ballet flats are amazing, comfortable and good for walking. I have metallic and black versions. They have held up like sneakers, but work fine as a simple work shoe.

I mostly wear Naturalizer flats, but a lot of that is because they come in wide. I have a pair of gold flats and a pair of black flats, and I wear those almost exclusively.

I've been meaning to hit up Loft for some tunics. I have a girlfriend whose wardrobe is basically tunic/chunky sweater/T & long cardi + leggings/jeggings/skinnies + flats/boots. She always looks put together and comfy and swears by Loft for her tunics. Not sure where she gets her sweaters, but I imagine a mix of Loft, Old Navy, Gap, and the like.

Tunics won't work for BFing unfortunately. Plus I have muscular legs so leggings/skinny pants look bad on me!

Ah, did not consider breastfeeding! And I've seen you! I have a really hard time believing you'd look bad in leggings/skinnies. Bet you look great! But if you insist.

Last spring/summer Charming Charlie had really cute ballet flats. I didn't buy any because I was sure they'd be uncomfortable, and now regret it as several of my friends have them and love their comfort.
I wear a lot of layers - t-shirt or similar under open sweaters. I get a lot at TJ Maxx and target. Loft may be a better bet though with their petite a section. My mom is very petite and can pull off a similar (but more mature) look without looking like her clothes swallowed her.

Also, there's something about leggings that make me feel as though my butt is hanging out. And if you're squatting a lot to pick up little kids, you do not want to feel like your bootie is out. That's why dressing is so hard as a mom! You need to be covered but it can't be fussy or ill fitting or whatever because your kids will inevitably try to pull it down, on it, or stain it.

I have a bunch of darker NYDJs that are a little looser than jeggings. They give me better coverage, I think.

Could you do nursing tanks in various colors with different cardigans to layer? I also see a lot of chambray and plaid these days. Would button ups work for be a PITA?

Those would be great if I knew what to buy. Seriously can't stand shopping. Do you have any cute ones you like? I need links, I'm so hopeless.

Not a SAHM but I work from home a lot... I mostly wear nicer jeans - I have some dark wash, mid-rise Joes in both skinny and bootcut and those get the most play. For what it's worth, I know some very fit people with muscular calves and I've never known someone who couldn't wear skinny jeans. If you're not comfortable in them, that's fine, but I'm betting you could find a pair that work if you wanted to. Also t-shirts, button ups, and sweaters. I have a dozen Target tank tops in white, beige, and black - not the ribbed kind, but not spaghetti strap either. They're super soft and stretchy enough to pull down for breastfeeding. In the winter I layer those under long-sleeved t-shirts, sweaters, and button ups from J. Crew, TJ Maxx, Target, Gap, and Banana Republic. I try to get "nice" t-shirts that I don't feel sloppy in. They do age quickly, but then I just demote them to lounge wear and then replace them as they get worn out and holey. The sweaters aren't ideal for breastfeeding but I just hold them up out of the way for now - when I was breastfeeding more often I wore more button ups and thinner t-shirts with tanks and stretchy lounge bras underneath that I could pull out of the way. For flats, I know everybody pees themselves over Tieks but I can't do the thin, flimsy kind of flats, I'm too abusive. I like Borns, they have a more padded insole and if you get leather they hold up well.

I would recommend you find your favorite "nice jeans" - dark wash, just enough stretch to be comfortable dealing with kids all day, sturdy enough denim to hold up to day after day wearing without going all fuzzy. Get 2-3 pairs and just mix those up with t-shirts, button ups, sweaters, and blouses you like.

If you like button ups, Target has some decent ones, and you can find every possible color and pattern of the "Perfect Shirt" at the J. Crew Factory Store.

                              SAHM capsule wardrobe?

I have a good pair of keens for children that run away from me, and two pairs of Patagonia mesh flats that I live in. Flip flops do not allow me to sprint after escapees. 😄

I have 4-5 nursing bras that are in rotation, then 3-4 sports bras for working out.

I mostly wear older workout black adidas capris on bottom (retired from running and HIIT) and fitted vneck tshirts (Target, Ross, TJMaxx, Marshalls) on top in various colors. Very wash and wear. I do have nicer tops that I'll occasionally put on if I'm going somewhere that calls for it.

Summer is maxi skirts (which still allow for chasing escapees) and again various fitted stretch t's.

Workout gear is newer fitted capris in various patterns (I get good deals at Marshalls\TJMaxx), better sports bras only for said workouts, socks, and my $$$$ asics shoes (which I retire every 4-6 months, based on use).

I do own a pair of Paige denim jeans and a pair of NYDJ that are worn to nicer events with said cuter tops. I tend to do snap ups or more flowy cut tips, which all me to snap down or lift up, depending on nursing needs.

I also own a few wrap dresses or vneck stretch dresses that allow for pull down nursing, if need be.

That's all she wrote -- natural fibers here will cause chafing or hold onto moisture, so I'm usually in synthetic Stretch fabrics 24/7. 😁
