Thanks! When I clear up the time to dive back in, I'll look in to that. Certainly, the on the couch Ancestry research of Census, Marriage, Death and such was not enough for tracing once we ended up in Italy....

This week, my research led me to near relatives that I had not previously met; third cousins descended from a cousin with whom my grandmother emigrated. Apparently, these two women did not get along and there was a falling out long ago. In the course of this research, I learned the story of my great-grandfather's brother who died in the Holocaust, August 1941 when 1600 Jews from their village were murdered. This would be the g-grandfather of the cousins I met yesterday. Two weeks before the German invasion, he'd sent a letter to his daughter in America that said "the whole world is on fire but we are lucky to have the great Russian army to protect us." That was the last she heard of him or the rest of her family. Her descendants were able to verify that he, his wife, his son, and the son's family all perished. I just can't get this out of my head. It's just so vivid. Prior to now, I just had the nondescript story from my grandmother where she'd say that everyone in the village was a "cousin" to her. This is the first time that I have an intimate connection -- someone with a name, a wife, children -- to this catastrophe.Wife and #1 Fan of Attending Adult & Geriatric Psychiatrist.
