My mom is refusing to evaluate. She and her neighbors are planning a slumber party in the 2nd floor elevator bank. I'm frantic but she says there's nothing I can do about it.

I'm thinking of everyone in Florida. A mom in one of my mommy groups was talking about flying out and another mom got on her case that she doesn't understand why non-Florida people freak out and evacuate. I seriously wanted to punch her!! Having transplanted myself, I'm glad I had fellow spouses to hold my hand and check up on me for my first tornado warning.
Also, this yesterday. The same person saying she wasn't leaving her home, evacuated her house today.

I'm not evacuating and feel safe enough. We have a generator should we lose power for an extended period of time. We have a closet under the stairs that we threw toddler mattresses in for tornado warnings. We have lots of chocolate and games. And we have "bored" kids because I won't let them watch TV and it's too wet to play outside. They already watched 1 movie today....that's enough for now.Mom of 3, Veterinarian

It passed by us in fairly non-eventful fashion. Some light debris in the yard but we still have power (hooray!!). Winds appear to be dying down now and everything is set to reopen in the morning.Wife of a surgical fellow; Mom to a busy toddler girl and 5 furballs (2 cats, 3 dogs)

I guess I've always been lucky (hurricanes turn and financially to afford sound construction). But I think the 24/7 news cycle and social hysteria are out of control. Hearing newscasters say "You will die. Your children will die too" is ridiculous! Of course the oceans and rivers are going to flood. That's what happens when a lot of water falls from the sky at once and when the tides are pushed to shore because of a storm (storm surge). I guess they are trying to prevent another Katrina, but it really just seems to make people freak out, not make better preparations. People who can afford it, protect their stuff better and themselves. People who can't, aren't able and are less willing to leave what they have. Yelling at them that they are going to die doesn't help anyone.Mom of 3, Veterinarian

Are you in an evacuation zone, Michele? We have some family there who thought they weren't going to be and then ended up having to evacuate.Julia - legislative process lover and general government nerd, married to a PICU & Medical Ethics attending, raising a toddler son and expecting a baby daughter Oct '16.

Nope. We weren't in an evacuation zone. I think my sister might have been (St Johns River area) but she didn't evacuate. She's doing fine as of about an hour ago.....and so was her section of the river, though we all know the river is going to continue to rise over the next few days.Mom of 3, Veterinarian
