That is so impressive!! Also super awesome that kind of camping is in your backyard. Your 7YO is a badass!

I have to say, even though the trail was familiar and I took the majority of the equipment, it was still a lot for her -- her pack plus sleeping bag, pad, change of clothes, and a little water still added up to probably a quarter of her body weight. O_O

It's fair to be nervous about bears, for sure. The area we camped (and DH and DS backpacked) this week has had high bear activity and I was a little concerned even though my campsite was busy as hell and had a bear safe for our use.

My sisters in law are cabin people. I just don't get what's relaxing about having to bring all your own groceries, clean, make up beds, cook, etc. during a vacation. I already do tons of that at home and it's much more comfortable cooking and cleaning with my own tools. I think DrK and I are more like "bed and breakfast people."

Exactly! For me, vacation is about sleeping in, brunch (not prepared by me), wine, museums, sight seeing, reading, shopping, naps...

YES! I've never been camping and I honestly have no desire to. It sounds like a lot of work and not my idea of a vacation. Although I do sometimes fantasize about this one place in Santa Fe that is off the grid, tiny cabins and offers spa treatments. Does that count? 😉

My sister in law has taken my kids camping and they love it. They are always asking to go. I'm just happy to have a family member who will give them the experience they enjoy.

Cabins appeal to me right now because going out for meals (brunch or otherwise) isn't relaxing on vacation with kids as young as mine. And there's no sleeping in or laundry.

So...basically...it's not a vacation. It's a trip with your children. When R is 3-4, I think vacation will start again.

Agreed. Still, if rather not do a trip at all if I have to do housework anyway

I fucking love camping. We did it every summer when I was a kid. Now that we have more disposal income and I kind of don't want to sleep on the ground, we have a trailer. It made our last 3,000 mile move so much more pleasant.

We're glaming in Canada in 2 weeks. Canvas tent sleeps 6 in bunks, inside table that sit six and a heater. 23 water falls that you can jump in. Unlimited lymes disease. LOL. We're wearing hunter's grade bug stray. There are yurts with star ceilings that rented out the first day they open for reservations in April. You should look up in BC.

I've always wanted to see this place on in BC. A winter get away for you two.

This was pretty much right where I was a few weeks ago. We've been talking about getting an RV forevah, and finding excuses not to camp if it means sleeping on the ground, even though we have so many good camping memories. But this last tent camping experience, and the kids' joy in backpacking, have started to sway me back again. For tent camping I brought a 5" thick cushion to sleep on, which was almost adequate.

We love it. Just got back from a two week camping trip in the RV with just hubby and I. It was bittersweet without the three kids along. We have a family picture from every trip we have taken in the RV inside over the last 10 years on the walls along with fun ones. Now we will add some of just the two of us I guess. We had a ball though.

We did it, we took our 5 month old backpacking/ one night wildnerness camping on the beach of Fire island. Loved it! He's not yet crawling and still exclusively breastfed so that made it easier. It wasn't cold I'm just wearing a coat bc we're about to go off the beach and into swarms of mosquitoes! DH and I are covered in bites but somehow we protected baby and he only has 1 bite!
