I've been thinking of you! This sounds like a pretty big ordeal. I think we had a radiator pipe burst when I was a kid in Alaska.

We just keep putting one foot in front of the other and solving the problems as they come up, and the insurance is taking great care of us. I'm more than ready for this all to be done though. (At least the re-roofing is through as of today though, so that's one fewer disruption to our lives!)

Oh no SD. What a pain. Too bad it's not summer and you can't just camp in the yard 😀.

Oh man I'm sorry! That is horrible. Hopefully no new flooring had been put in yet?

Surely there is something in the lease about damage caused by idiocy?

Yes. I'm just not sure how they can pay for it all. We'll get what we can from them and help (hopefully) from insurance. I'm meeting the adjuster and seeing the house for the first time today.

No, there's a lack of local contractors so the company we chose can't start the remodel for 4-6 weeks. Anyway, I'm sure they wouldn't have started until the repair was totally 100% done. So...it's only affected the stripped-down bathroom. And the subfloor that had been previously exposed by ripping up the tile and underlayment. And the insulation and crawlspace beneath. :\

It doesn't change much for us; the water damage people clean it up again (fans blowing again, sigh) and the contractor rewrites the repair estimate to add the new stuff to be fixed, and we keep figuring out the insurance side -- and we hope like heck that the new sewer fixes things.

To be honest it's been a good experience for my kids to learn gratitude. They recognize that our family has a lot of privilege to be able to get through this without long-term financial impact, and they have a lot of empathy for people who might be a lot more seriously impacted by a similar situation. And they're so impressed when we flush a toilet at the rental place! It's the little things!

We have a little 600sf cottage that insurance is paying for us to stay in. DH is still going to be able to walk to work (though it will take almost twice as long.) We might be back in our house by Wednesday. In the meantime, there is a LOT less housework in 600sf than in 2000! I am actually going to make time to knit today!

Excavation day! I could use some juju for easy digging. According to the plumber, that's what will make the difference between having the water turned on and being back in our house Tuesday night vs. as late as Thursday...

Well, the digging wasn't unusually difficult, but the city main wasn't where the schematic said it'd be. So after two days of digging they haven't found it, so they can't even lay the new pipe, let alone connect it up. This is officially getting old. I mean, it was getting old pretty much from the minute the fecal matter started backing up into our house a year ago. But if I thought we were done last Thursday...really done now. Really, really.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to walk two blocks to the unheated public restroom and relieve myself before the work crew gets here to start decontaminating the crawlspace and bathroom. Again.

This was my thought, too. Is the city going to pay for the excavation of the wrong area? :/

Probably not, but we'll see. Just talked to the plumber in charge of the dig, he says when he called the city yesterday afternoon (after having city workers in and out all day poking around at the connections and manhole covers nearby) all they could say is "your guess is as good as mine" for where it's at. (Internet research tells me our town sewage treatment was built as part of the WPA after the Great Depression, and it would appear that ours was one of the first homes to tie into the system? So 75 years ago they maybe didn't keep such good records...)
