We are busily trying to get settled here in Connecticut. It is beautiful here! It was a lot harder to move (emotionally) then I thought it would be. I really miss all of my friends from Michigan, and have had some VERY hard days, but things are kind of settling down and getting a lot better here. The scary thing is that next year at this time, we are going to be doing the EXACT same thing... packing up and moving yet again! From here, we are heading to Minnesota! So any of you in the Rochester area - do you have any good information on different neighborhoods, school systems, etc that would help us know where to house hunt?
Good luck with the rest of the movers out there!

We are pretty much all unpacked here in Georgia. DH started on Monday and I have been exploring the area and working in the yard with the several hundred thousand mosquitoes that live in my yard with me.

Count us in- except this was an "on-purpose" non-medically related move from a rental to a owned home!!

So- one block over and two streets up and it's taken longer than the move 1500 miles last year!!

We moved and are starting to see the end of the moving box tunnel. There is a huge pile of boxes and stuff at the end of our driveway because Portland trash only takes on 32 gallon container -- additional bags are $4.50. 8O We're working on plan B.

I like the house (to DH's relief) and am starting to feel settled in. Some of our stuff was poorly packed and put on the trailer so I have to make a claim with the movers. They have been really nice about it though. The house is in fine shape structurally but needs some cosmetic work. We have repainted all of the bedrooms and Eric is busy putting in new shades and light fixtures. The bathrooms and kitchens are going to be....interesting. I can't think about boxing stuff up again right now. Eric starts his residency 7/15 so it's nice that he has time to do house projects and we will hopefully have a day or two to take a trip to the beach. Summers in the Northwest are gorgeous!!

            Hi everyone,

Sorry I've been so MIA lately. We moved also - from DC to Maryland so not too far at all. Our new place is much bigger and nicer. We're not quite done unpacking but hopefully will be soon.

Today's DH's last day as a first-year fellow - whoo hoo!!! Second year is going to be so much better.

I hope everyone's settling into their new places.

              move

Well, we moved my husband in to Arizona a few weeks ago.

I'm still in Canada awaiting immigration.

I'm looking forward to getting a tan for Christmas.

              I miss my baby.

We moved to the Cleveland area--Chagrin Falls, OH. DH started work the day we got into town . The good news is the job's hours seem much more reasonable than anywhere we have been. I think it will be hard to make the shift to attending though--lots of new things to do. He left town already on a business trip for 4 days and we have only been here 2 weeks. Our house is great after being cramped for the last 7 years in small apartments. The town seems very nice and the neighbors are friendly. My 5 year old keeps asking me if she is going to make new friends today and my 8 year old thinks there are no boys in town. I'm not ready to go out and actively socialize yet---for some reason this time I just can't get that excited about meeting new people. I'm tired of saying goodbye to all my friends every few years. This time is supposed to be different, and here I am unable to be friendly. Yikes. I need an attitude adjustment.
Hopefully that will settle down--after all I haven't finished unpacking the boxes yet!!!! (At least they take my empties here Nellie!! ) We also need some cosmetic work (THE HOUSE, not US personally ), but old wallpaper is involved and the stripping takes some time. The plaster walls underneath are in good shape, though. We got one room done. We've also spent hundreds of dollars in Target, BedBath and Beyond, and Costco. I'm not going into any stores for a few days--I can not handle all this purchasing!
Our closing and move were disasterous--but we made it. I'll have to post that tale of woe separately. All and all, I think it will be good here. The lifestyle and pace are a lot better than we've had at our other institutions. I hope I can catch up on the boards in a few days. Love the addition of the Morgue--have to check that out!

Angie -- Glad to hear you made it! When does school start for your kids? Are there any young kids in your neighborhood?

Still haven't made it to the beach...yet. Hopefully this weekend. Thanks for this suggestions. I was going to pack a lunch but fish and chips sounds pretty good. We are in Portland proper and there isn't a limit on recycling. But we found out that the cardboard has to be cut down to no larger than 36" and bundled with twine. And you can only have one 32 gallon (or something) like that can of trash and it can't be too heavy. We generated a lot more trash than that and have been busily cutting down and bundling boxes. Good idea on Lewis and Clark -- it's only a few minutes from here (I think?) and we've been not-so-jokingly joking about finding a large institution to sneak into and do away with our trash! In Denver, there were no limits, it was free, and we had an alley where large items conveniently disappeared in the dark of night.

Congrats on all of the moves!!!! Angie, good luck with the wallpaper, We bought our 70 year old house 3 1/2 years ago, with multiple layers of wallpaper over plaster walls. I spent the first year stripping wallpaper. My husband's secretary is house painter, and he told me to throw away all of the commercial wallpaper stripping chemicals. I used half strenght liquid Downey fabric softener. We scored the paper witht those rollers to put little holes in the paper, then sprayed it down, waited a half hour and scraped away. It worked really well. Good luck.

Luanne- Thanks for the tip. We've been trying just water. It works ok, but anything to speed it along would be great. I tried the strippers on another house but they didn't seem to speed things up. Glad to hear they aren't worth trying again. I swear I will never wallpaper out of respect to future generations of home owners What a nightmare to remove!!!

Nellie- There are little kids very close by (4-5 years) but no one 7 and older or male. I think the big kids are all at the community pool, which is unfortunately closed for membership this season (bummer). I'm going to call and beg the director in a few days to see if we can get in to just swim in August. Someone told me it was worth a shot. I think this will be a great neighborhood after we meet some other families. It it tougher having a summertime plan when you don't know where anything is or have anyone to play with. Also, having a ton of boring Mommy jobs to do around the house is just not helping with my kids' attitude. My son has decided to read alot--that's a bonus. He usually has to be nagged into reading. My daughter has discovered the TV. Not so good. How are you doing with moving in? (Beyond the cardboard!) Any good neighbors?

Alison- Where are you located? I'm happy about the trader joe's....I could walk to ours in Boston. I'm glad we can still shop there. Woodmere seems pretty ritzy--I went there yesterday to go to Organized Living for some boring home stuff (trash cans, hampers) and had lunch with the kids. Lots of ladies-who-lunch types about and valet service to your car in the parking lot. I'm going to have to start dressing better .

We finally are moved, just have about a million boxes to unpack. Our new neighbors are very nice.

Bleh. I don't know how some of you guys pack up and move with more than one kid. I don't think I would survive if DH and I attempted this with several little ones.

Glad everyone made it safe and sound!

Angie- A couple thoughts on outings near you. Lake Farm Park in Kirtland and Patterson's Fruit Farm in Chesterland has nice activities for kids.

Alison- I lived in Cleveland Heights too. I loved Pub on Lee, magaritas at Lopez and the Colony. I am starting to miss it with you guys talking about Cleveland!
