  • How is socially isolating going in your state?

I’m in MN. We’ve had few cases and less than 200 deaths. At our hospital, we have had a total of 9 mild cases. We have plenty of PPE and were way over prepared. We converted whole wings to covid wings, made additional ICU beds, and were prepared to intubate up to 400 people 😳. Our hospital is practically empty and the CEO is sending messages to people on FB to come to the ER if they are sick. People are so afraid to come in that they are having heart attacks and strokes at home. They are closing wounds that need to be sutured with super glue. One woman who did this got a badly infected hand as a result. She waited to come in, and lost three fingers. Ouch. Our hospital has furloughed a large number of doctors and nurses and there is now talk that if elective surgeries and specialist appointments don’t resume soon that the hospital which serves 900,000 people won’t survive. It’s scary. This is not New York. Our state has good stats. I feel we need to open up our hospital again. How many people will die of lack of treatment or surgery if we don’t? Our neighbor was diagnosed with prostate cancer and needed surgery. It was cancelled. My good friend needs part of her bowel resected. It was cancelled. She is now in terrible pain and bleeding out of her rectum. Someone else we know has terrible kidney disease. She is close to needing dialysis and transplant. She can’t get into her nephrologist at Mayo. I read about two children that had to give up their organ transplants. Will they get another chance? Covid is a serious issue, but what about non-covid patients who need medical care. I’m frustrated. Medical care is essential and our hospitals here are not overwhelmed.

On another note, people used to be good about social distancing here. Now many have given up. Our 80 year old neighbor held a dinner party last Friday and “all her friends came.” She said she’s over social distancing. Neighbors are walking in groups together talking all the time. On any given day, I see 6 or more cars parked out in front of someone’s house. Today, Zoe and I walked the dog around the neighborhood. About 25 kids were congregated in a backyard. They were fishing and jumping on a trampoline. I counted 3 sets of parents standing within a foot of each other talking and playing with the barbecue. Zoe was so mad. She misses school and her friends and didn’t understand why those people weren’t following the rules.

How are things for your hospital and in your state? Are people still social distancing like they did initially?

Just took the dog out in our front yard. Our ten year old neighbor has 5 friends over playing football in the front yard. This is ridiculous.

Did I also mention that almost no one here wears masks in the stores? They never have. Maybe it’s working for us. I read that the cloth masks are basically ineffective anyway. Who knows. I think the CDC was against them before they were for them. I wish we had a president who could lead the nation through this. I don’t think leaving it up to the governors is working so well. Of course, I could drive to Georgia and get my nails done now! <sarcasm>.

      Can you tell I’m bored?

Elective cases at our hospitals are opening up within the next few weeks. I’m seeing the same thing as you though, about people not social distancing anymore. My elderly neighbor has been going to a friend’s house to play cards, and last night she had a dinner party with about a dozen people of all ages. I’m starting to feel really bad about keeping my kids away from their grandparents, since we seem to be the only people still following the guidelines.

I think it’s just not sustainable over the long term. We are social beings. I have not seen my adult children in so long. Today, Zoe kept talking about missing school so much and needing her friends. They are zooming each other, but it’s not enough. She missed having a birthday party last week and is now missing her friend’s end of the year party on the lake. It looks like we’ve moved past flattening the curve with new goals of 0 cases or a vaccine before we open. Virginia is now saying it will take them 2 years to get to phase one of opening. I’d be leaving that state today. Every day is just more drama and shitty news. I’m close to trashing the social distancing myself. I want to invite my daughter’s best friend over for a play date. Even if that means they sit on the driveway 6 feet apart for a few hours.

We have German friends in the Cities (both doctors) who have invited us over for dinner and a German movie. I thought they were nuts but now I don’t know. The only thing holding me back is that the wife drives me crazy.

They are planning to restart elective cases here soon. Our governor is allowing things to open up in a week but is leaving it up to individual school districts if they will reopen this school year. Our district has a couple meetings next week to discuss it. I’m hoping they cancel the rest of the year.

Some of our kids friend’s backyard butts up to our backyard with a narrow park between us. It has been hard to keep them separated. We’ve settled on allowing them to chat together outside as long as they maintain an appropriate distance but as time goes on lately I’ve been having to holler at them to keep their distance.

We have been shut down since 7 weeks ago and there is no end in sight. I haven’t been out of my neighborhood except for car rides with the kids a couple times. When I have gone out, I’ve seem people waiting in line outside Chipotle all 6 feet apart with masks on and stuff like that. Everyone is antsy and counting down the days until this ends but people are compliant for the most part. We are supposed to be shut down until mid-May but I fully expect that to be extended. I figure we will be on lock down until mid-June at the soonest.

Texas didn't get hit that badly. My sister in the ICU said it is full and they are worried about it overflowing if it spikes and elective procedures have opened up, but it never got as bad as they were worried about. I haven't seen her in 6 weeks and I miss her. We've followed the rules and I agree it is getting harder and I'm seeing more people openly flout them. School is cancelled for the year and I wholeheartedly agree there. I'm unsure what exactly the plans for opening stuff are, but it appears stuff it going to start happening in early May. I'm not sure if that is too early or not, the frankly I'm putting my house back on the market April 29th and moving mid-June no matter what so I guess I'll be part of the problem too. I really wish the kids could see their grandparents these last few weeks, for my sake and theirs. I'm leaving that up to my mom because she is still freaking out about all this badly.

TN seems to be opening even earlier. I'm worried about Chattanooga--they have a heavily service/tourist/start up economy and I think it was pretty devastated. Petty, but I'm sad that some of the things I was looking forward to were axed because of all this. There was a cool little Opry up on our mountain that had been operating for 40 years that was closed permanently. And it looks like the minor league baseball team is going to go too. It does appear that the hospital DH will be working at is going to open up more elective procedures soon and I have to say that I'm thankful for that. That might stave off the potential pay cut that was mentioned.

Mostly I'm getting really tired of this false dichotomy of "stay locked down forever" vs "open up now." No, not of all those that want the economy back open aren't just ready to get their hair cut and nails done, they are worried about financial devastation. And I completely agree that opening everything up right now would be a disaster. It has to be somewhere in the middle, but moderates never seem to get much of a voice. I've gotten into a few times with my mom though because she just doesn't seem to understand how we could get out of lockdown before a vaccine. She might have the means to do that, but that's quite the privileged viewpoint to have.

It’s a shit show here. Nearly 7K dead and over 100K cases. I know someone who lost their dad from it. My county alone has nearly 4K cases and over 200 deaths. It’s everywhere. Southern part of the state is still headed towards a peak, IMHO.

DHs group had tremendous decrease in kids coming into ER and floor admissions. The community hospitals stopped taking peds admits to free up bed space for COVID pts. The group still sees the few kids that come into the ED, but any admissions are sent to dedicated peds hospitals. In order to reduce foot traffic, DHs group has pivoted to also provide coverage on the mom/baby floor, seeing newborns. It’s more day shifts, which is nice, but there are a lot of babies to be seen (everyone was busy last summer).

I think I’m going back to work next week. I worked my half day yesterday and he said, “see you next Wednesday, or sooner!”
Our stay at home is due to end may 15th. We’re had no new cases or deaths since Monday.🤞🏻

We had 1 case in the hospital with a total of 6 cases in our county this whole time. Then they rolled out mass testing. 30% positive for people with mild symptoms that don’t need medical care. The narrative? A spike in cases. While that was happening our food processing plants shut down when they rolled out testing. Many shut down. Trump demanded they reopen. There is almost no meat available at the grocery stores here. Nothing. To top it off, the hospital now has 20 cases in one week. 2 are in the ICU

So we’re fucked. Our governor is about to order another month long shut down. There is no end in sight. I just really can’t go on living like this.

I'm in Washington state. I think the majority of people near me are following the rules. There are masks everywhere --80 percent + when I'm out getting staples. Our numbers never exploded like they thought but keep slowly growing instead of decreasing. We've plateaued with the amount of covid cases / ventilator use in the state but it hasn't decreased. That's concerning. I know 4 families through my kids that have lost people. It's very real here and I think that's why I see the majority of people following the rules. Everyone I have talked to seems to know of someone who has died of this.

Costco only lets a certain amount of people in the store at once. I spent 40 minutes in line 6 feet apart of everyone waiting to get into the store about two weeks ago. Grocery stores have one entrance/exit. They count the amount of people in the store. I saw a woman in her 50s get tossed out of albertsons when she was intentionally flaunting less than 6 feet spacing. I saw the manager talk to her since I happened to be in the isle. She was in head to toe red clothing with a red "Make America Great Again" hat on. She was on her phone and bumped into me physically once. Honestly it was a bit scary. I guess someone reported her. The manager called the cops.

We have meat and most other big ticket items here, but antibacterial wipes are nonexistent and so is hand sanitizer. I've been buying big gallons of 409 and using paper towels in my house. There is a local distillery that started making hand sanitizer at cost. It's been great for our community.

We will likely have our shelter at home mandate extended through May. We find out this Friday. I'm torn on what we should do but I just want more information. I feel like we've been in a holding pattern for too long. The different school districts across the state are putting out grade expectations/guidelines for high school students and each district is different which just makes no sense to me. One disctrict is giving everyone As (are you kidding me?).

As a family we are fine and extremely fortunate on so many levels. The time together has been mostly good but I'm ready to baby step our way to a bit more normal living. We have significant travel/sports schedules in the summer and I've spent a ton of time on the phone changing hotel dates and flights as each tournament gets pushed back to July or August. The time this takes to do is comical and might be all for nothing if everything is cancelled in the end.

I'm at the point where I just hope we start school on time (not likely based on what I'm reading) and we move forward starting late summer/early fall.

People are taking it very seriously here and I'm happy about that. Ours was one of the heavily hit states with 25000 confirmed cases and over 2000 deaths. In the last week hospitalizations have decreased and DH has seen his ICU census go down. We are supposed to begin opening things up on the 20th, though I hope schools will remain closed until the end of the year.
I hope when things do open up, strict social distancing will remain in place. DH has been an ICU attending for 6 years and has treated a wide variety of patients and he's never seen anything like this. When things do open up, more people will die for sure. But hopefully we can protect the most vulnerable.
