As I read that, I was thinking of all the things at their home that are being unattended. Do you know anyone in the area who can go and check in on their house (if needed)? Maybe you could offer to send emails or make phonecalls on their behalf to update friends and family.
My cousin and his wife lived in Austin for 3 years. If you need advice about a specific location or service, I can ask them. I'm not sure what kind of things could be done, but you might try locating a Mothers of Multiples group in Austin and pass that along to your friend. A friend of mine with twins found a "support mom" (a woman who had twins a few years prior) through the MOM group where I used to live. There's another group for parents of multiples but I can't come up with the name right now. Gift certificates to that grocery store would be a great gift!
