  • The Pope

I'm not catholic, but it's so sad to see Pope John Paul II in the final stages of his life.

I'm not Catholic either, but I was saddened by the news that he has taken a turn for the worse...

Wo! The Vatican was pretty good at keeping the bad news to a minimum - or maybe I don't pay attention very well - because THAT was a surprise! I just found out when I logged on a few minutes ago that things were getting hairy with him medically. And, now they have to choose a new pope!

Really? Everything I saw still says "clinging to life."
          Not that it's very hopeful....

They did do a good job of keeping it under wraps, that or he deteriorated really quickly. How do they pick a new pope? I guess we'll find out.

Well, if that novel (was it Angels and Demons?) was even mildly accurate a conclave of bishops must be called and they will meet together and elect a new pope.

(BTW Since I live in Boston smack dab in the middle of an Irish Catholic neighborhood I'm sure I'll hear quite a bit about this by this evening - I feel so badly for all of my Catholic friends and neighbors right now. ).

I didn't read Angels and Demons but I think that Da Vinci Code might have mentioned the conclave, too.

Well, according to Julie's post, there is a conclave. Everything in Da Vinci code must be true!

                  He just died.
Where did you read that? I'm still reading that he's clinging to life on cnn.com.

                    sorry.....

And, I didn't mean the cable guy who fixes her CNN when it isn't working....

I also read Angels and Demons and - if memory serves me - it was similar to the description given in the link that Julie gave. One of my coworkers remembers when this pope was elected, she said the entire process was truly fascinating.

If he hasn't died already it certainly seems as if the end is near for him. He has suffered quite a bit these last few years, I hope he is finally able to have some relief and peace.

I see it now on the top of the cnn page -- I wasn't looking at the top -- only the earlier headline. Thanks.

Okay, now the cnn page has reverted to the clinging to life headline. All the outlets and individual journalists want to be the first to report on his demise and I guess as a result it's like a high-tech version of the telephone game.
