I'm not catholic, but it's so sad to see Pope John Paul II in the final stages of his life.

Wo! The Vatican was pretty good at keeping the bad news to a minimum - or maybe I don't pay attention very well - because THAT was a surprise! I just found out when I logged on a few minutes ago that things were getting hairy with him medically. And, now they have to choose a new pope!

Well, if that novel (was it Angels and Demons?) was even mildly accurate a conclave of bishops must be called and they will meet together and elect a new pope.

(BTW Since I live in Boston smack dab in the middle of an Irish Catholic neighborhood I'm sure I'll hear quite a bit about this by this evening - I feel so badly for all of my Catholic friends and neighbors right now. ).Who uses a machete to cut through red tape

I was going to say that Kris has "friends in high places"
And, I didn't mean the cable guy who fixes her CNN when it isn't working....

I also read Angels and Demons and - if memory serves me - it was similar to the description given in the link that Julie gave. One of my coworkers remembers when this pope was elected, she said the entire process was truly fascinating.
If he hasn't died already it certainly seems as if the end is near for him. He has suffered quite a bit these last few years, I hope he is finally able to have some relief and peace.~Jane
