Having lived in Germany, I'm partial to Miele, Bosch, etc... Mieles are quiet, they don't tip over (they don't have the upright design), and they seem to do a really good job. They're just way too expensive here.

So my questions for you Dyson owners are:

Are they quiet? For example, would you be able to hear the phone ring while you vacuum?

Are they heavy? And if not, do they tip over frequently?

Are they quiet- no, not particularly. It's a different kindof vacuum sound than the loud raucous ones of days gone by. You could probably hear the phone ring but maybe not. Are they heavy- not compared to some others. I haven't ever had mine tip over. I did pull it off the stairs and onto my body for some lovely bruises once. (that was my fault though)

I'm personally in love with the Miele dishwashers and if the one we had here hadn't been new when we bought the place, I sooooo would have installed one of those.

I know I started this thread, but may I just point out that we rarely get this many posts on a thread unless we're in the debate forum??

That is what I would REALLY like to know! How is it that this silly vacuum actually transformed us to people who ENJOY vacuuming? There should be study done on this!!!!

My first vacuum love was a Fantom Lightning(bagless canister). It worked wonderfully, but then the d*mn accessories started breaking and they were *extremely* expensive. I still have it, but I use it for gross stuff like the basement and the garage. (My Dyson is too good for that! )

I was so surprised that Consumer Reports rated Dysons as low as they did. Every person that has one raves about it.

Alison, I can't ever hear the phone ring when I'm vacuuming. It only tips over when I'm trying to go farther than the wand allows. (because heaven forbid, I actually unplug the thing and move it to another outlet )

I wonder if there are any appliances that make cleaning the bathroom a joy?

That was our first vacuum, and we had it for about 5 1/2 years before it died on us! Well it didn't really die, but it started getting rather annoying- the beater brush would stop and start. We loved that thing.

Dh told me tonight-- "Let's spend $50-$80 on a vacuum, that way when it dies in a year I won't feel so guilty about spending the money again." In my head I am thinking-- well over the course of X years I could have gone and taken that money and bought something that would last me 10 years, and I wouldn't be wasting gas going to the store to buy a stupid vacuum cleaner.

(Ummm I am a vacuum-cleaning lover as well.... I find vacuuming very therapeutic at times. It really helps when Emma and Brigham are fighting. )

DH's local aunt has a Miele vacuum. She loves it.

So we have a short berber type carpet that my Dyson works great on. I was concerned about how it would work on a shaggier carpet since we're going to be recarpeting the house this summer but we just got back from my ILs and they have a Dyson and a frieze (sp?) carpet and they say they just turn it to the bare floor setting and it works great.

So what kind of carpet are you all using yours on?

Our living room is a shaggier-type carpet (I didn't pick it, and have never ordered carpeting so I don't know the terms). It works great!

I am officially jealous of all of you with new carpet. Ours looks like a monsoon hit it...of juice and milk
