Anyone watching? We have been a soccer family for years because of DS. I'm rooting for USA and England (because I like to look at D.B. ). USA plays Italy on Saturday. Very tough. I'm hoping for a Cinderella moment.

Yup! We're watching. We're rooting for Germany and the US. Dh is a mean trash talker. I didn't know he had it in him!
He has to work when the US plays tomorrow, but I'll be watching!

We're watching too. Coming from Romania, football (or should I say soccer?) was basically the national sport. Unfortunately, Romania didn't make it to the World Cup this time so we're rooting for my fiance's home team, Ecuador.

Alison, we're playing you guys next. No biggie though because we don't need a win but it sure would be nice. :ra:

ooooh .... a little veiled trash talk right here!

we've been watching a bit - not seeking it out, but watching if it seems the most interesting thing on. soccer guys are great!

I won't be upset if Germany doesn't make it far. They're no fun to watch, because they lack technical skills. I think the only reason they win is because they run guys (theirs and the opposing team's) all over the field. Poland actually looked better to me. Did anyone catch the Polish goalkeeper. He's dreamy.

I hope the US does well, but we'll have to see tomorrow.

So....who do you think is best technically? We're not watching ALL the matches so I'd like to catch some of the best action. England played so-so IMHO. I saw Ecuador play a few night ago.

Which group is the most competitive?

Oh gosh, Angie, I don't know who the best is. But if you caught the US/Italy match, they were both so good. Awful officiating made it a downer, because I think the US actually could have won had they not been playing with just 9! Italy lost a player, but gained a player: the referee. Both teams looked good today. I didn't catch the Ghana/Czech Rep. match, but from replays, they are pretty good technically as well.

Next Thursday's two matches should be good:
              Ghana/US and Italy/Czech Rep.
If and only if the US wins theirs and Italy wins theirs, then the US advances.

I take it back: I'm rooting for the Americans, not the Germans.

It was great, wasn't it? I would love the Americans to win, as well. I was bummed after the first game. They redeemed themselves, though. *sigh* Let's see what happens. I think Italy can take the Czech Republic - and we should be able to beat Ghana. Right?

Ghana will be tough, I think. They've just gotten an energy boost from their upset win. Thursday's a long ways away. My inlaws called from Germany today and said they watched the US/Italy match on tv. They were suprised that Italy couldn't close the game and said that Mastrioeni deserved the red card.

Alison....I missed your reply. They thought he *deserved* the red card? Come ON! That was just a standard tackle! I know I'm biased, but I thought the Italians were really playing up the injuries. It was acontact game, but honestly....stretchers, all that magic spray on their rear ends, all the limping? Bleh. At least the USA had actual BLOOD on McBride.

Dh is off today, and we just watched Germany's first goal in the 3rd minute. Kris: I'm only watching to see Klinsi! Germany doesn't need this game. Although the pretty bad defense on Ecuador's part (sorry MissCrabette!)gives the Germans the chance to try to actually pass the ball to each other and not run each other around the field for once.

Well, my mil said that a tackle like that is "potentially career-ending," while a shot in the face is "bloody, but you'll still be able to play." I told her that a cheap shot to the face like that, in the normal world, will give you a night or two in jail.

                          Let the games begin.

Alison, don't be sorry. That was a pretty bad game on Ecuador's part. Especially the way they let Klose score the second goal. Sheesh! It's been a while since I've seen such bad goalkeeping. I wonder what happened to Mora because he was so good during the first two games. Oh well, let's watch the rest of the game.
