Sadly, my husband doesn't like German food much and his dad (who does all the cooking) does more Italian and French than German. My host mother back in high school used to make really good German things like Kassler, Rouladen, Frikadellen. I love the cheese, thick sauces, starch, and the not-so-sweet desserts. All of which my husband will not touch (the boy doesn't like potatoes, cheese, cabbage, and on and on and on). I would love a good recipe for quark; do you have one?! Mmmm. Lecker!

Thomas is a lucky man if you do a mean quark!

I haven't tried it yet. I purchased a jogurt and quark maker online and it arrived today. I'm dying to make some dessert recipes (now that I can't eat them since I want to lose weight ) I always loved quark with banana mashed into it.

I'm so surprised that your dh doesn't like the german cuisine. My mil spoiled my hubby terribly. She makes all of the old-fashioned meals from scratch...complete with sauces, etc. DH turns up his nose at things like lasagna, spaghetti, casseroles....geesh!

I buy the sauce packs online or from a german store in St. Paul because...I don't know how to make most of it. I do make a lot of diff. german meals...Rouladen, Frikaddelen etc are pretty standard around here (but I have the sauce pack for the Rouladen . Tonight were having chicken with a cream/mushroom sauce. Again..confession...seasoning packet. I feel like such a cheater!!!

I can make a few things from scratch...I make plenty of german noodles from scratch and a couple of diff. sauces...but most of the time I'm super lazy...super..super lazy.

Jenn, it's a type of cheese. Here's what I found about it:

Thanks for looking it up for Jenn!
It's darn good stuff--it's sort of creamy and good with desserts. I've never had it with bananas. That sounds really good. But I've got to keep my promise with Annie over in weight loss.

Kris, I wouldn't say that making German noodles (do you mean spaetzle?) is exactly lazy!!!

When can I have dinner at your place? I dream of Rouladen. Especially in winter. Do you use Maggi? Knorr? In Frankfurt there's a Maggi store and they have all the sauce packets lined up on their shelves. They do demonstrations and if I remember correctly, you can order some of their stuff and eat it there in a Stehcafe-type setup.

Alison, I must be overlooking something but I can't figure out why your quotes didn't work. I've gotten a "debug" message a few times after posting. Maybe that is why?

Alison, don't remind me of Maggi. They had some kind of contest in Romania where you had to put up a sticker on your windows for a chance to win money. The darned stickers were everywhere!

Oh and Nellie, I've seen the debug message several times too.

Seems like the server is having issues. The debug keeps popping up but the messages still post. Kris has told me that some folks are also having issues with PMs. I think the problem lies outside of our control for now - but we will look in to it with the person that maintains the server. Hopefully it won't progress to something worse.

I get the "debug" message after I submit a post. I initially thought it was just my fault for not being able to do quotes. I don't do many fancy things in my posts! Thanks for looking into it.

                        Alison,

I have almost exclusively Maggi seasoning....but it's just a coincidence. My mil also brought me back a lot of Dr. Oetker baking stuff....the vanilla sugar, etc and so I do use that from time-to-time.

The problem with cooking these meals is that many of them take time. Even with the seasoning packets for the Rouladen you have to actually prepare the meet, fill it, roll it up, secure it..blah, blah, blah. Then my kids won't eat it So it is a lot of effort that goes kind of unappreciated.

This week I did make the thin pancakes stuffed with spinach, tomatoes and gouda cheese just for dh and I. He worked late and so I fed the kids and made that. The problem is that it was a recipe from my magazine and the sauce was awful. It was some flour, milk, butter thing. I would have been better off just sticking with whipping cream. I love flaedle!!!!!

Quark is a kind of cheese...it's made from buttermilk. You can make it really creamy and it has an almost jogurt like texture...it tastes great with fruit in it!

And...I just discovered that it isn't loaded with carbs so now...I can have some!

DH was so excited about the quark maker (that also makes jogurt) that he drove around town last night at 10pm looking for buttermilk with live culture...but couldn't find any I guess that'll be my job today.

babble, babble, babble (must cut out caffeine!)

Hold on here, Annie (with the diet plan): you make Rouladen and your kids won't eat it?!?! May I pleeeeease come over and eat any leftovers?! Your pancakes sound wonderful! How did your kids like them?

What exactly is a quark machine? Whoa: and it also makes yoghurt? Where can I get one of these? I'm dying for some Haselnuss or Walnuss yoghurt. I love the creaminess of German yoghurt... Kris, why oh why do you do this to me when I'm trying to formulate a diet plan?!

Does your husband eat Handkaes? Mit Musik? If he went to school in Giessen, then I'm sure he knows what this is and will crack a smile.

I'm assuming jogurt is German yogurt? My MIL makes yogurt from culture she gets from India. Jacob loves it.

She left me some culture in an old make-up container in my freezer ... but I could never make myself make it. The make-up container skeeved me out. She reuses EVERYTHING (which I realize is a good thing), and cleans stuff out before resuing ... but an old foundation container should be off limits, IMO.

The worst was when she gave me chutney in an old "Udder Cream" container (which might be worth mentioning in the dry, cracked heels thread).

                              Oh...ugh!

Alison...my daughter is a vegetarian and refuses to eat anything that had a face...my older child won't have any foods on his plate touch each other and that includes not allowing foods to be wrapped up in other foods My 7 year old has decided that he only likes PB&J sandwiches and my 2 year old actually cried last night when I put the chicken with Pilz-rahm sauce on the table. He wouldn't even eat his noodles. I'm better off making chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese for them!

I got the quark machine at a german store online:

                              http://www.germanplaza.com/productcart/ ... roduct=719

I was a little leary about ordering from there because it doesn't have that professional 'Amazon.com' feeling about it...but...it only cost $28 and I decided to try. It arrived within days. The only negative is that Thomas ordered a Deutschland sticker for his car and they misspelled it as deutchland
