  • HELP!

    Sooooo,

As many of you know, we hate our current assignment and have been trying to figure out a way to get the Air Force to move us. Yesterday we received official word that DH has a spot in the teaching program at Wilford Hall IF he will agree to extend his committment for one year -- he would get out in 2006 rather than 2005. It is a huge compliment that he is being asked to be staff there, since he has only been out of residency for a year and a half at this point. The chairman of the OB Dept. has done all kinds of work to make this happen -- he has talked to all of the assignments people and cleared everything, so all DH has to do is say "yes" and it's a done deal.

We always swore we would never extend, but now that we are faced with that decision, the answers don't seem so clear. We all really loved San Antonio during residency. My husband is going to talk to some of the staff there (the generalists) and see what their perception of their work environment is. It is hard, after having been a resident there, to realize that the staff may actually enjoy their jobs. But the call schedule would be awesome!

    Any thoughts, opinions, etc. ?????

The salary difference (by staying in an extra year) would be a loss of perhaps 50K to 80K, but so much of our income is protected from tax now that it is hard to make the comparison.

    Thanks.

    Sally-

I think you need to remove the extension factor from your decision, as much as you can. First, it's an awesome show of support for your husband. He'll certainly be able to add that to his CV and that will definitely increase his bargaining power on the civilian side.

Secondly, have you all looked at malpracctice insurance costs? That may well balance out the loss of potential income (unless he found a practice that was willing to cover it)

Thirdly, can you handle living there for another two years? If so- they stay the course. If the thought makes you want to throw youself off the closest bridge, then come back to SA. Also, I know you found a good school for your son, how does it compare to SA schools? Would he get a better education there?

and lastly, and this is just my opinion, since they've done so much to get your husband back there, I think he should go. (but you know me!!)

    Just some thoughts-

    Jenn

      Thanks, Jenn.

I agree with all of your points. I would survive if we were to stay here, but without a doubt I would be happier in San Antonio. The boys ask if we can move back every couple of months. I have actually already called some schools down there and asked them to send me information packets -- private schools are enrolling now and I will have two in school come next fall! Travis' partner thinks he should go, another doc that he's friends with says "don't extend", both his parents think he should go -- in fact, my mother in law said to him that he should do whatever I want! (Have I mentioned that I love my mother in law?)

      I will keep you posted.

        extend

Sally....after all of this time in training, what's one more year ..especially if it means that you'll all be happier for the next couple of years and you'll get to go back to San Antonio that much quicker. In terms of a pay loss....Uncle Sam would take most of that anyway 8)

I say go for it..what an awesome opportunity for all of you.

Sally- I just read your post about SA on the "roll call" thread- you said you loved it there and hated to leave! 2 years in a place you can't stand, or 3 years in a place you love???

Be sure to post what you finally decided to do!

            Peggy,

I will let you all know as soon as we make a decision. What about you guys? Are you moving to D.C. or what?

Travis got in touch with an old residency buddy (now staff) in San Antonio and she said she would call him tomorrow and give him the scoop about the work environment there. We have heard plenty of rumors this year and morale seems to be pretty bad in the dept. -- so he is looking forward to hearing some straight talk from someone who is there. Everyone there that we have mentioned this to so far (not the guy who made the offer, but others) says "run like he**" but then again they have never been assigned where we are and are taking for granted the support staff and facility they work with/in.

So I am hoping DH has an enlightening phone conversation tomorrow that will help him make up his mind definitively. I am going to try as hard as I can not to think about it. 8O

            Thanks for the feedback, guys.

              Okay, here is the latest.

My husband has agreed to extend for one year, provided that he can be assigned to either Wilford Hall (San Antonio) or Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH. Both have advantages and disadvantages for us. Ohio is 3 hours from our hometown and less than two from our best friends in the world. We would love to be back in the midwest. There are numerous moonlighting opportunities there. BUT houses are WAY more expensive there than they are in San Antonio, and we don't know a soul in Dayton. San Antonio -- well, we loved it there and have many friends who are hoping we'll move back. The work atmosphere may be a little tense, but there will only be two calls a month. It is very far from our family, though, and moving back there will mean that by the end, we will have spent NINE YEARS in Texas.

The consultant to the assignments officer will be figuring out which of these scenarios will be our fate. We are looking at it like a win-win proposition -- as long as it gets us out of here, we are happy. I will keep you guys posted and I hope I have an update SOON!

                extending

It sounds like you guys made a decision that you feel good about! I hope that you will get to go to Dayton since it will bring you closer to familly...but SanAntonio would also be a great adventure...too bad Jenn is leaving in July...but Robin is there!!!

                  DAYTON!?!

I didn't know that this was a real option for you all! I thought that you were just asking me about it hypothetically. Very cool...I get home to Dayton about 4 times a year...we'll have to meet. Ask me anything. WPAFB is very cush. Of course, it lacks the allure of San Antonio...but how nice for you to be close to your families.

                  Keep me posted.

P.S. Sorry for the delayed response. I don't peek in here very often.

Hey Sally- how did I miss this?

Excellent news! We have a lot of friends from WH who have ended up at W-P. The current chief resident put that as her first choice.
