  • Let the fun begin!

Well, we are now in the Air Force.

DW has been on base now for two days. She actually reported on the first day and was told that it was not normal, most people will report on the last day allowed! Oh well, I think she was nervous!
She had to have her sponsor show her how to pin on all stuff that goes on a uniform...and then tell her how to wear it! She hasn't got any idea since she hasn't gone through the Officer Training yet. SHe was terrified that someone would salute her and she would have to salute back! So our neighbor (retired Lt.Col) showed her how to salute.
All the places that she has been have been treating her like she is crazy, all have asked where she is coming from and no one understands why she doesn't have any prior military experience. She has been doing remarkably well, considering she was called a nurse twice today (and this is just the inprocessing!!)....that is one of her VERY hot buttons!!!! Her temper is growing, and that is a good thing!!
She is studying for boards too, so needless to say she gets a wide berth in the house! She will fly to Atlanta to take the exam from the 17-19th, then she will come home, do more inprocessing and comuter stuff for them, then she will leave on Nov 7th until Dec 10th for the Officer training stuff. It will be a strange Thanksgiving this year.

Anyway, just wanted to update and let you all know that the administrative troubles that we had throughout residency with the AF followed her here, but it seems to be getting taken care of much quicker!! And they are very excited about her coming to work since they are shorthanded.

    Welcome to the military!

and tell her not to feel too bad, my husband had to show to a co-worker how to wear her beret and to tell an intern that the reason a soldier needed an excuse was because she was missing formation, and then had to explain what formation was....

    She'll get it soon enough.

It takes me back to the days when my husband was starting all that military stuff... He came back from OBC knowing the basics, though. He still doesn't get his uniform all spiffed up correctly, but there are enough prior service people here at USUHS that help him. I'm kind of curious as to what will happen when he gets to a "real" base. Here at USUHS the students are more student than military, and they are pretty lax with uniforms, etc. The whole hat thing drives me nuts though. He has to wear his hat (beret) when he is not exactly within the usuhs complex whenever he is outdoors. Plus, he has to salute when he is outdoors and not when he's inside. Plus, magically he is supposed to know everyone's rank when he sees them in BDUs, even if they are from another branch and there really is no apparent indication what the rank is... I predict once your wife gets settled in within the clinic or hospital or whatever that she'll do just fine and the military officer protocal will be the smallest difference between military medicine and civilian that she'll have to adjust to!!!

BTW, it is not just non-prior service medical people who get confused about saluting. When I was going to base (NNMC), the guard at the gate actually saluted ME. He was clearly a newbie unless there's been a change in policy and the spouses get saluted... Not that we shouldn't get saluted, after all...

        Peggy,

One quick way, although I'm sure he knows this, is that enlisted personnel don't wear their rank on their beret. And since he's a junior officer, that means he probably will have to salute everyone else wearing rank on their beret and wait to be saluted by those without the rank of the beret.

PS- I have been saluted, too. It's pretty funny.

We get to go see her tomorrow and bring her home Friday!!
