I was going to stay out of this one but you know I can't!

They have to LOVE what they do (or at least like it A LOT!). Regardless of what they choose residency will most likely suck - that is why they call it residency. So after residency you have to hope you find a good job that is "easier" or more "family friendly" - as previous threads have shown this week that doesn't always happen and until you're in the thick of it you never really know.

My DH comes home every day happy. Seriously! Except on days someone has died which is hard on anyone. He LOVES what he does every day, yes there are staff that he doesn't like to work with and yes there are nights when he's there late b/c something stupid is keeping him there - but when I ask him about his day that isn't what springs to mind, its the "cool" procedure or the "cool" tumor he got to take out.

Do I have to sacrafice b/c of his choice - absolutely. I moved to a town with very few job opportunities for me and I know once we add a child in December things will change even more but I seriously don't mind the sacrafices I have made. I never found a job I love and because of that my family is my #1 priority.

So they have to make the decision that is right for them and the family - nothing is perfect.

The original poster asked about which was better for families and did not actually express a preference for either specialty.

I never saw this thread, but one could do an anesthesia fellowship in OB.
