When I was pregnant with S, my sister pregnant as well. My nieces wanted to name the babies Hurla and Pearla. Thankfully, Sophie was to be Pearla.

I always knew I wanted to name my first daughter Isabella. Growing up in the 80's it wasn't very popular and I got the idea from a character in Days of our Lives. Little did I know that it would rank #28 the year she was born and is now #2! Seriously bums me out!

I've always liked Beth and Anna, but DH wasn't crazy about either of those. If we have another girl, Elizabeth will be high on our list, but we probably won't call her Beth.

Just get another puppy - name her Sequoia, and give her to DH as a birthday present

Sequoia doesn't seem so strange to me, but I had a classmate with that name when I was growing up. Also, Oklahoma has a reading program called Sequoia Books, so I heard it a lot and don't immediately associate it with trees.

Sequoia isn't weird to me, either. I know several women and knew a lot of girls when I was a kid with that name. Granted, I grew up in the Pacific NW where nutty/crunchy is the status quo, though.

I've never checked our kids' names on any lists. They're all family names (from WASPy families) so I'm sure they're all pretty high ranking.

Sequoia says strength to me but I've never known anyone with that name.

Sequoia screams "tree" to me but I grew up on the East Coast. I can also see how mean playground kids could take it to mean "big", etc. Also, I have a feeling that you'd constantly be explaining the spelling to people - not necessarily a deterrent but something to consider. I actually had to make sure my spelling was correct just now.

My one name tip (from personal experience/pain): do not name your child something where you HATE a ridiculously common nickname for it. This is an open forum so I will use an example instead of my own name. My parents picked a common name that is well known the world over, akin to "Matthew" but HATE the name Matt. They used to make me correct people if they heard people say it. It was mortifying to correct people, especially in middle school. And to make matters worse, they changed the spelling so that the nickname wasn't it the name - as if they named me "Mathew" and then said "You can't call [him] Matt because that's not how his name is spelled". NEWSFLASH parents, you don't introduce yourself to people by spelling your name so no one can tell whether they can use the nickname or not. So obnoxious. Ok, going back to my hole.

T&S - that is an interesting point and I'll be interested to see what happens with my R. We call him by his first name and when people ask we tell them he doesn't have any nicknames. But my dad goes by the shortened version and if that is what he chooses when he gets older, fine but I'm hoping he sticks with the full name.

As for Sequoia, I would never name my child that but it would sound pretty funny with our last name.

One of DS' classmates' mom does this. Her son's name is Benjamin and she becomes irrationally livid when someone calls him Ben. "I named him BenJAMIN! Not Ben!"

DH and I were born in the same year; that year, his name was #42 and mine was #74. They aren't really out there, and it is somewhat rare that we run into people our age with our names. Coincidentally, my brother has the same name as DH and it was #109 the year he was born. Currently, DH's name in the top 250. A variant of my name is in the top 100 (and I've never heard anyone have this name) and my actual name is in the top 150. But I never hear about people naming their kids either thing recently.

When we chose DD's name she was no where near popular, her name hasn't hit the top 1000 since the 1930's or something like that. Which would be about right since DH's grandmother that she is named after was born somewhere around then but it has always been popular in the UK. However there is now a popular singer with her name and in 2010 it cracked the list at 908. No ones asks where we got the name anymore I think people just assume she's named after the singer which is to bad.

SS, your DH's grandmother's name is also my DH's grandmother's name! Well, it's not really her name, as her real first name is something that has been butchered since she was born (apparently there are errors on her birth certificate and in census records). Anyway, we really love this name, but because our last name is so rare, the combination of the two are already in use by DH's grandmother. We love her a lot, but we do want to give our kid their own identity. So we're pretty sure that this name will be a middle name.

I always loved the name Emma, it was my grandmother's name, but it is way too popular right now. I also love Natalie, but same thing. I've got a lot of ideas for girl names, so I think I might be alright. As for boys, the two versions of the name I'm currently in love with are in the top 150, and I'm okay with that. I don't really have many ideas other than that one, but fortunately we do have some solid boys' names to choose from in our families.

The issue for us, as some of you have mentioned, is that our last name is rare and easily mispronounced, is to pick a first name that isn't too popular/not too out there/has a nickname and blends well with our last name. We shall see how this goes!

Maybe a crazy/notorious celebrity will name their child Sequoia and that will knock it off the list. I could see that happening.

And I'll tell you what makes it hard to spell: more than two vowels in a row and people tend to stumble when you're spelling something out loud to them, so says my experience.
