MrsC...I'm open to talking to you about your stash if you wanna purge. I'm sorry it isn't working for you.

Maybe I'm just getting too hooked when I see those adorable fluffy bums! It wouldn't hurt if I got ONE NB to take absolutely heart melting photos right?! (Guys, I feel an addiction coming on!)

We waited until 6 or 7 weeks to start with cloths. Ours just didn't fit as well before then. I'm sure it depends on the brand you use, baby size, etc.

I wouldn't bother in the hospital because I would not want to deal with washing meconium. We started around 3 days old. I had two covers that had a cut-out for the umbilical cord, and about a dozen newborn-size prefolds. I think I probably washed every day, but there was no day and night, so who knows. Even newborn sized diapers looked enormous and ridiculous on my 6 pounder. It was adorable.

We actually used a diaper service really early on, which I wouldn't really recommend, but they did prefolds and covers. We used disposables for a few days and then switched right to the cloth. We didn't have trouble with fit, but my kid was big. And since we had the service, I can't speak to the cleaning aspect.

Absolutely! They're just taking up space now. I have a few AIO's (NB to 12lbs), a dozen or so prefold's and a couple of bigger covers and pockets. I'll haul them out this evening.

Meconium is ugly but it washes out easily, NB fluff is to die for, and the hospital didn't have anything to do with it, I diapered my own babies. I think DH put DS in sposies at first but I changed him to cloth when we went home at 12 hours old. DD's first diaper was a Kissaluvs 0 and her second diaper was a WAHM fitted, lined with organic bamboo velour. Nothing like sweet soft cloth against a tender brand-new tushie.

GMD orange-edge fit DD perfectly for several weeks, but she was a chunker and soon went to GMD yellow with the orange as nighttime doublers.

Such a variety of responses! I think that's why I love the idea of CDing so much. You play around with it until you find what works. I want to do more research on getting meconium out before deciding for sure but I still sorta really want to do it. Hubby will be off and my mom and MIL will be visiting so I feel like I will have such a great support team to help me get going. I'll keep you posted.

Can we talk about fabrics for a second? Hemp, microfiber, bamboo, cotton, wool... who has strong opinions on any of those? If I go by my yarn knowledge I think I will love the feel of bamboo and cotton but I have a lot to learn. Is one type better for inserts than others or better for heavy wetters than others or...?

I didn't know that about meconium, Alison! It just looked like it would be a pain to wash off.

We used GMD cotton prefolds and Bummis polyester microfleece liners. http://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/...ce-liners.html

I admire those of you that made it work. Count me among those that couldn't keep up with the laundry (and DH wasn't on board. Fair enough)

TBH the #1 thing that made it work for us was that our washer/dryer happened to be located right beside the nursery, so it was really easy to start a load after changing a diaper, or reset a rinse cycle when going to check on a sleeping baby.

I used prefolds and covers. I guess I was determined because I kept up with them and used the community building laundry machines in the basement.

We did disposables at first until they fit into the cloth. I didn't want to invest in newborn diapers and had read that meconium could be hard to get off. It was also easier those first few weeks not to worry about it. We use mainly BumGenius (3.0s?) velco pockets, Flips with snaps with the stay dry inserts, and a few misc others. I do really like the BumGenius but if I was to do it over again I would not go with velcro. The velcro has worn out on a lot of ours and even though I replaced the tabs with their refresher kits between kids the main velcro panel on the front is coming off on many of them. They always stick together in the wash too. Also DD likes to take her diaper off and it's pretty easy to do with the velco. The snaps on the Flips have held up much better through the years and DD can't take them off herself. I still like the BumGenius better than some others like Happy Heinys or Fuzzy Buns that we've tried. I like the Flips and think that it we did it again I'd probably just go with prefolds and covers.

We had a tough time with DS because he has really sensitive skin and got rashes easily. You can't use cream with the cloth. I tried lots of different things like liners, etc, but eventually we just would use disposables when he had a rash until it cleared up. It did seem to help him to be in a more breathable prefold with a wool cover for a while to air out when he had a rash. When DS was in daycare I would send four diapers (change every 2 hours) and a small wet bag. I use disposables when we're out of the house because I'm lazy.

The small wet bags are nice to have in the diaper bag too for dirty clothes after a blow out or wet clothes after splashing in a fountain, etc. We have a step trash can with two liners for the pail and misc small/med wet bags. I never got a sprayer, just dunk and swirl.

Really cloth diapering has been pretty easy. Good luck.

Question: did anyone find they preferred a different system from the one they started with when their kid switched to solids? How do the prefolds do with toddler poops? For some reason I have in my head it would be harder to get toddler poop out of prefolds than out of pockets or AIOs -- I'm imagining the prefolds bunching or getting twisted with a busy toddler and big nasty poos.
