    Re: I need a blender!

I had someone once tell me that it wasn't worth buying an expensive blender if you were going to be chopping a lot of ice b/c the ice would dull the blades and you'd have to replace it anyway. What are your thoughts on this?

We have an old cheapy blender that I use to grind my compostables before I dump them....neither of us really drink smoothies/icy drinks but this summer has been so hot I might reconsider!!

Are blender blades even sharp to begin with? I've never cut myself on one; guess I always assumed it was the speed of the blades that did most of the work anyway, not the sharpness....Even if they were sharp and they did dull, you could sharpen them, I would think, or replace just the blade part, rather than the whole thing. We replaced our old one because we'd broken TWO of the plastic mesh-gears on our old one, so we decided it was just bad design, and replaced with one that had all-metal gearing. No problems so far, and if anything happened to it short of the motor burning out completely, we'd just replace the broken part, rather than the whole thing.

Our Oster is at least 10 years and I haven't had to replace the blades yet. I don't chop ice alone though, there's always liquid and other stuff in there but I mostly use it for shakes, smoothies, margaritas (things that require ice).
